Hi everyone, I always loved the design of the cMP, I've always wanted to have one since I was a kid and I saw them at the Apple store, the problem is back then they cost like 5k USD in my country.

Last week I saw a Mac Pro 1,1 for 30 USD, that the owner claimed it didn't work, but he wasn't really sure. Despite it came with no HD and no GPU, I bought it anyway because they are very scarce in my country and usually sell above 300 USD in working condition, and I kind of need something to replace my old 2007 iMac as web browsing and Photoshop computer for something with more RAM.

I plugged an HD in one of the SATA ports to check if the PSU and logic board works before dumping money in a GPU, more RAM and a couple of X5365 (I don't have any PCI GPU to test it now, and cannot an original one with boots creen because there aren't any for sale in my country), and to my surprise the fans work fine, reacting to temperature changes in the room, the HD spins, the Superdrive works fine, and the diagnostic LEDs light up when I press the button, except for the GPU (oddly this one is on sometimes), EFI and CPU overheat and failure, which seems fine according to the Apple repair manual (Since I don't have a GPU to test it).

The problem is, it did not recognize USB devices, it did not charge my phone or light up a pen drive. However, it does up power a usb HD. After a long night taking it apart and hours of pressing Reset SMC, reset system buttons, plugging it and unplugging it, removing and reinserting the 2032 battery, the ram, and I don´t remember what else, it finally chimed, it detected my phone and charged it, pen drives, mouse. I used it for two days like that to charge my phone and iPod, but yesterday I turned it on to check and it doesn't chime anymore, and it can't power up USB devices other than usb HDs. The internal hd I placed also spins, and the fans work well.

I don't really know why, but when it did chime (until yesterday), to turn it off I only had to press for one second the power button, and also I could restart it with the button in the logic board, and as soon as it was plugged in it automatically turned on. Today I tried again everything I think I did the other day and everything I could come up with, but it still doesn't chime, and it doesn't power USB devices other than HDs.

Can someone please help me out and share your knowledge with me? I have already searched tons of forums looking for a solution, but I couldn't find any. I would really appreciate if you answer.

Thank you for reading, I know it's long. If this post does not belong to this section of the forum, please let me know where this should be posted, whether here or in another forum.

You seem to already know more than me about the hardware, but Im still gonna guess a bit.

1) issue is that your Mac does not Chime when powering on and also does not charge devices over USB (except Harddrive - I assume an external one)
- correct me if Im wrong ^^

Chime:
Do the speakers work when the Mac is turned on? The same are used when turning the Mac on. If not then the speakers have an issue, if they do, wichever part of the Mac that sends the signal for the sound has an issue.

Also: Wich Mac exactly is it? I dont know what you Mean by MacPro 1,1.
If it is a Mac with the T2 Chip it does/should not make sound during startup.

Charging:
Sounds to me like a power delivery issue. For iPhones i think the minimum is 5Volt. Should still work with a bit less, but if it is not enough it does not show as charging. Had it with an iPad that needed a 12V charger and I used a 10V charger - no charging at all.
So I am assuming that the external HD needs (a lot?) less power than that and works, but it doesn't work with other devices that need more.

Wichever it is in both cases - I dont really know how to solve those issues. I think that some kind of Hardware repair would need to be done and I know pretty much nothing about that.

Those would be my guesses for now, hope it helps

The computer is a Mac Pro 1,1, from 2006/7. It powers both external and internal HDs with no issue, but now it won't chime (It did up to a few days back, and also charged my phone). I know it's not a speaker issue because it did chime when powered on until a few days ago. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read and answer.

How about you keeping just one thread about this? This is the third thread about the same problem…

Did you check if the CR2032 battery if it is still ok? Or replaced it? A bad/empty battery can cause the mac pro not to boot. Sometimes you can get it to boot by powering on (no chime), then power down and immediately power on again.

Yeah, the first thing I did was install a new one. I'll try powering it on, then power it down and immediately power on again as you said. Thanks for your advice

You're right Alex, I posted once in Mac Pro section and once in Tech Support, but the one in the Tech Support section was moved to Mac Pro.
