Finally found that its the GPU preventing my Pro from working. The 6870 has died (probably caused by me cleaning it trying to get the fan quieter)

I need a new GPU but can't find any 6870s locally, my opinions are basically here - http://m.novatech.co.uk/products/components/amdradeongraphicscards/

I don't want to spend a fortune though. Does anyone know if any cards from that site will work out of the box (no boot screens) without any additional software and without wiping/reinstalling OSX?

Thanks guys

I dropped a GTX 570 directly into my MP1,1 running 10.7.5 and everything just worked as expected. I didn't have to do or set anything. I went from the 7300GT to the 8800GT one week and the very next week up to the GTX 570. All about 6 or 8 weeks ago. I paid like $150 for the reference Nvidia 8800GT (shame on me) and $90 for the GTX570 (1.2GB) like-new-in-box. This puppy:

Typically US prices on the bay are like $120 to $150 last I looked a few weeks back and I have a hunch that unless you want more memory in a card or maximum CUDA cores, you won't notice any different in your MP1,1 between a GTX570 and something supposedly much better - like the GTX770 (untested, guessing) which costs a lot more. Nor something a bit slower like the GTX470 for just slightly less money (again - untested, guessing).

Hi, thanks for the info. I've never used nvidia cards - ATI fan boy and they don't sell the 570 in shops, I needed a card yesterday morning so I took the risk and picked up a 6670 and it works! So if anyone else finds this thread by searching for a really cheap GPu that works out of the box on a 1,1 running 10.7 get a 6670 (I went with XFX)
