Hi guys,

Ive got a 1,1 upgraded with x5355s and a 3870 card. The card died a few months ago so ive been using a PC 4850 to run W7 on this machine.

I'm looking at getting a PC card, either nVidia or ATI (probably the 6850 seems the best) but I'll need something higher than snow leopard to get the drivers, but I can't install the new OS's without being able to see the screen.

So my quesiton is - If I buy the 6850 will it be recognised at the install screen (put in a new hard drive and boot from 10.7 backup disk) will it be recognised without the drivers?

6870 is still better.

Huh? 6850/6870 is directly supported in 10.6.8. You won't see a bootscreen with any PC card, as the limit is in the EFI. It will boot and run OSX flawlessly still. If you insist on having a bootscreen, however, you will need an Apple card. Either a "full" card like e.g. the 5770 or a "helper" card like e.g. the 7300GT.

My mistake, I meant the 6870. So it is supported in 10.6.8? Thats great, so I can just slot it in and go. I'm not concerned about boot screen, I've just read that you need drivers or 10.7.

Thanks for your reassurance.
