Ok, I know! My baby is dated! Yet she still runs great and I love her!
Anyway, on my old Dell Poweredge 1900 Server hosting our website at home. I noticed it used the exact same memory as my Mac Pro.
(At this point I had little knowledge as to why the MacPro had large heat sinks)
So I ordered 16GB of ram online and installed them on the Mac Pro.. Think it cost me a total of $40 and gave the machine a great performance boost (up from 7GB).
When I was talking to a friend about this. He was explaining why Apple used the larger heat sinks vs. standard FB-DIMM. (Lower fan speeds and heat distribution).
I looked around that night a sure enough, there was debate going on in this matter.
So, I downloaded SMC fan control and hardware monitor. Then I started using more demanding application like Final Cut and rendering videos along with a program like second life.. Second Life appeared to be more demanding on the system.. Memory running high as 182F (83C). Somewhere I think I searched into it and the limit was like 193F - 195F. Other than that.. the higher heat contributes to premature life span of the memory..
When Second Life runs awhile .. The CPU / Memory fans automatically increase to around 1196rpm from 540rpm.. which brings the memory down to around 176F (80c) which is not bad..
Yet, If I manually increase the fans to 2015rpms. The memory drops to around 151F (66c). The noise does not bother me so much. I worry more about the energy cost then the noise..
My bigger concern is do I run a risk of burning out the system fans rather quickly? When I did a processors swap from quad to octocore system.. Everything was blown out with alot of air. Until the system was clean internally, Power Supply and all!
I am not wanting to drop $150 into this system for the larger heat sink memory and also don't wont to burn out the system fans at the same time..
Anyone have ideas as to my dilemma and if I am ok?
