Mac Pro 1,1 logic board fail?

Hi,

I have an ailing Mac Pro 1,1 (firmware updated to 1,2 and running 10.7) - rock solid every day since purchase from new but yesterday I had an out-of-the-blue kernel panic and on restart I just got a stripy green screen. Next restart it got stuck re-chiming over and over and was unresponsive to any key commands.

So, I opened it up and noticed the CPU B red led on the logic board was lit up. I went through all the reset options I could find online (removing power source, removing and reinstalling battery etc) but nothing worked. I tested each of the DIMMs and they seemed ok.

After removing the gpu (Radeon 5770) and powering it up with nothing else connected (just the power cable) it didn't get stuck, the red light went out and all seemed well - so I figured it must be the gpu that died. To test this I installed the old gpu that came with it when new (X1900XT) and it now starts up but I'm getting random issues after a few minutes - kernel panics; restarts; spinning wheel; and sometimes it just goes blank with both the CPUA and CPUB led lights illuminated on the logic board. (When it is running I've pressed the LED diagnostic test button and the LEDs light up as they should according to the official service manual.) If I don't open any apps (only tried Mail so far) it lasts longer before something knocks it over and I even managed to copy off some files to a usb stick, but it's clearly not happy.

I ordered a replacement 5770 but it's probably fair to assume something else might be the problem. Ok, the old X1900XT in it at the moment was on its last legs before I swapped it out for the 5770 but it didn't make the mac unreliable (just graphic glitches from what I recall).

I did a cmd-R reboot at one point and checked the disk and there were no issues there. It's probably just going to be a case of replacing things to narrow the field (upgraded cpus will be next after the gpu) but just wondering if anyone has any pointers for me based on this report? Pleased to report the replacement 5770 has sorted all issues. I've even put my old 30" cinema display back on (which I thought was dying some time ago) and it's perfect, meaning that the old 5770 was giving me problems for a while without me realising. My 9 year old set up feels new all over again

Having said that, I've ordered a pair of x5365 chips and another 8gb of RAM so it should be even more refreshed by the end of the week.

There are two pars of LEDs for CPU A and B. First pair (from left to right) is CPU A and B FAIL, and second pair is CPU A and B OVERTEMP ? Which excact LED is glowing red ?

Hi, it's the one on the left, the CPU B Fail LED - the same one that lit up originally. I've started copying the panic reports - will these have any clues?

First thing I would do is to put CPU B in socket A, leave socket B empty (to eliminate CPU problem), reset SMC, and test.

If result is the same, leave CPU A in socket A alone, reset SMC and test.

If result is still the same.....the first suspect is Logic Board.

You don`t need to change themal paste for couple of minutes of testing your CPUs. They won`t do any hard work

Ok thanks. The trouble is it usually crashes after about an hour - can they last that long without thermal paste?
What's weird is that I tried the old 5770 again (as it struck me that I'd put in a new gpu power cable with the new gpu so thought it might just be that) but it still gets stuck chiming over and over, and the CPU B fail LED comes on instantly. I don't get why with one card it gets passed the boot up (but then fails later) and with the other it doesn't! Maybe the old gpu and the cpu/logic board are faulty??? Or maybe the new gpu is faulty too?!! Hopefully I'll find some answers when I start pulling out the cpus.

Exisitng thermal paste on CPUs / heatsinks would do just fine. Just don't clean it when you swap CPUs and you will be fine for that short time. When you find 100% solution, and everything is ready to go in its place, then you clean CPUs and heatsinks and apply new paste.

I do hope that one of the CPUs is culprit, because they are very cheap these days.

Ok, an update. Since my last post I had to wait over a week for replacement cpu's so took the mac to pieces and cleaned out the mountain of dust that was hiding on the inner surface of the heat sinks. After restart it was ok for 24hrs but the green stripy screen kernel panics then reappeared, with both the CPU A and CPU B fail LEDs illuminated. The new pair of x5365's finally arrived so I installed them yesterday morning and had a wonderfully speedy and crash free day - but today, to my utter dread, the kps have returned.

I found another thread with the same issue and that turned out to be a faulty DIMM. I've tested my DIMMs as much as I think I can - putting them in pairs at a time, on one riser then the other, swapping top and bottom but the crashes still seem to happen.

I've been keeping a record of panic reports and they pretty much are all designated as 'Spinlock acquisition timed out...'

Any advice greatly appreciated. After installing new cpu's and gpu I thought I would sort this but it keeps coming back, like Michael Myers in Halloween.

Just updating this as I still need help. After a kernel panic where the screen went its usual stripy green it then started flickering and changing colour. This made me think that it might be a gpu issue, despite the recent purchase of a new 5770. I noticed that the replacement 5770 doesn't have the 'cage' slot that the old one had, and so it sits lower and closer to the top of the DIMM cover - which gets very hot. So I used a bit of cork (couldn't think what else to use that would be safe - and I had a glass or two on the go!) to prop the card up to keep it a bit further away from the heat source. I've also upped the fans using Macs Fan Control and things have improved massively. But, my mac temps look well within normal parameters and as far as I know there's no temp sensor on the gpu so don't know if it's struggling or not.

Here are the readings with the fans up (with them set to normal the DIMMs reach about 68C, and I think the IOH heatsink goes a lot higher too and then it starts panicking)..

I've had one kp since using this cooler approach which happened after shifting the fan speeds down slightly - the screen went stripy black and white and then it rebooted by itself. No warning LED lights appeared on the motherboard. So, something is not liking heat - any idea how I can narrow down my options? I've thoroughly tested the ram, replaced the cpu's and cleaned every bit of dust from the heatsinks. Could it just be that the new gpu is overly sensitive/not functioning properly? The seller told me it was thoroughly stress tested before sale but is willing to take it back - I'm just not 100% sure if it's that or if it's something else so wondering if anyone can make any suggestions.

Thanks Bax. Pleased to report I have finally resolved this. It was, after all, the replacement ATi Radeon 5770 that was causing the crashes. It was a non Mac flashed version bought on eBay and it clearly struggled once the heat built up inside the Mac Pro. It didn't have the black mount/heatsink that official Mac versions have so I guess it couldn't disperse the heat as well as it could and would fail when it got too much. I've bought a 5870 instead, which again is a non Mac flashed version but it has a large metal heatsink mounted underneath and is ok. Strangely, it only shows up as a generic "ATI Radeon HD 5000 1024 MB" in System Info but at least the old 1,1 is back up and running and firing on all cylinders.

I think i have the same problem. Although my cpu temps are much higher. High 50's Celsius. I have the old Dual-Core Intel Xeon2.66 GHz still in them and got new cpu's coming so i think the paste is old and new cpu's + paste will get better temps.

Anyway about the 5770. I flashed the sapphire vapor X PC card yesterday and all looked fine. But when i started today i got the green scrambled image right away. Now back to my 7300 and everything is fine there.

I'm still waiting for the real power cables so i used the 6 pins to molex cable which came with it and connected them with the dvd writer molex. Haven't done any intense video stuff. And checked the dvd's and they work fine so no burned traces that way. I think.

I can't understand the heat was the problem when the card just booted up this morning because everything was cold. But could be it was to high yesterday and the effects show only today.

So far i haven't seen an temp app that monitors gpu temp but i'm going after that to know what is up.

Now gonna try to reinstall the 5770 and see if the cpu leds burn.
