Mac Pro 1,1 panics immediately after CPU upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade my Mac Pro to 8 cores, but keep running into kernel panics immediately on startup. My machine is a Mac Pro 1,1 with dual 3.0 dual core processors and 6GB RAM running 10.6.8. It also has a flashed PC 4870 1GB graphics card.

This unit is rock solid and panics are extremely rare. I bought two 2.66 quad core processors (x5355 SLAC4) and installed them. I also ran the firmware updater to update my system's firmware to the 2,1 firmware.

The unit boots to the apple with spinning gear, then panics. Pulled the panic log and got this:

Are there any clues here as to why it's panicking? Did I get two bum processors? Result is the same with one processor only in the CPU A socket, tested both processors.

Put the unit back to stock except for the firmware for now and it's working fine.

Well the CPU's should run so I'd think there's a problem with something.

Try just a couple of sticks of RAM, a fresh OS on a spare drive. Have you ran the hardware test cd that comes with the mac? On second thoughts that may not work post upgrade to mp1,2 but a mp1,2 hardware test cd might.
 
Did you do the firmware update to 2,1 right after the CPU upgrade, or did it boot fine a few times before you did the update? Is it possible to undo the update to 2,1?
 
I did the 2,1 firmware upgrade after the CPU install because of the KP issue. Put the original CPUs back in to verify nothing got broken during the install and did the upgrade before taking it apart again. Yes, it is 100% reversible.

I tried with only the original RAM modules and a fresh OS on a spare HD, no change in behavior.

Just to clarify, I have never gotten a successful boot to the desktop with the new CPUs installed.

Any new updates on your issue? I'm also getting ready to do the same upgrade from 2GHz to a 2.66GHz. Just waiting for my order to come in from eBay. I also got the SLAC4 chips, so any tips would be great.

Thats the first thing that I thought also. If you got them from a reputable retailer you should be able to exchange them. If you got them from Ebay you may have been duped.
 
Just completed the upgrade. Entire process was not bad all, even the fan everyone seemed to be having a problem with came off fine. I had more trouble taking off that middle heat sink cover. One I got everything put back together it booted up normally.

So it might definitely have something to do with the CPU's you ordered. I found a guy on eBay that does a lifetime warranty and sold it to me for basically $100/set and it was professionally packaged to CPU specs and everything.

Anyways, his eBay name is esisoinc if you're interested. Hope everything works out with your MP and thanks for the help.
