I'm trying to upgrade my Mac Pro to 8 cores, but keep running into kernel panics immediately on startup. My machine is a Mac Pro 1,1 with dual 3.0 dual core processors and 6GB RAM running 10.6.8. It also has a flashed PC 4870 1GB graphics card.
This unit is rock solid and panics are extremely rare. I bought two 2.66 quad core processors (x5355 SLAC4) and installed them. I also ran the firmware updater to update my system's firmware to the 2,1 firmware.
The unit boots to the apple with spinning gear, then panics. Pulled the panic log and got this:
Are there any clues here as to why it's panicking? Did I get two bum processors? Result is the same with one processor only in the CPU A socket, tested both processors.
Put the unit back to stock except for the firmware for now and it's working fine.
