I've got an extra Mac Pro 1 and I'd like to use it to use it as some sort of a server that would benefit an open source project or something along those lines.

Any kind of number crunching. SETI@Home has always been cool to me, but I'd like to do something where it will make a larger impact.

I am also open to install any kind of OS necessary.

Call me crazy, but I'd just like to see what kind of ideas y'all got for me :)

You could put some nice video cards in it and set it up to mine some type of virtual currency for me. It's just and idea.

it works great for storage. I connected it to the network/nMP via cat6 cables and a switcher. 4 drives and two blue ray burners it's still very handy

I doubt SETI will achieve anything (but that's my opinion). So, I would probably support Folding@home for Cancers, Alzheimer & Parkinson.

Oh, I very much agree with you. SETI doesn't seem to get much done in the grand scheme (although still very neat.)

I will be doing some research on Folding, I've never heard of it. Thank you!

I've considered this, but would it be worth while?

Seti - rip

It's my understanding that SETI was decommissioned after they realized that that signals revert back to noise over time/distance.

That's odd, since just a few weeks ago they announced OpenCL 1.2 support....

ps: I wouldn't do this unless your electricity is free and you don't care about global warming. A 1,1 running flat out 24 hours a day is going to burn a lot of electricity.

And, since you live in Texas, you'll probably pay twice - you need to remove the heat it generates by running the air conditioner more.

Well there is also the age old question of are we (humans) unique or average in the universe. It's an important question, but if you say we are average that you have to assume that everyone else does things like us.

And if you look at humans, we only blindly shot radio frequencies out into space for a relatively small period of time. After a while we realized cables were better for the bandwidth we needed, or we started using shorter and lower power frequencies (Wi-Fi, cellular) for a lot of stuff. And we realized that we had to control all this content being zoomed around, we can't just have anyone being able to watch content for free or being able to access it due to privacy.

So we do not "broadcast" to the universe like we use to. And some scientist and theorists believe that not to long from now the only transmissions that will go to space are the ones we intentionally send out....and what tax payer wants to spend money on that?

Going by that notion, there may only be a small window of opportunity to detect an intelligent species from across the galaxy.

Do you get a cut of the profits? Or access to medication developed from all this free compute power?

That's why I got rid of mines and replaced it with a 2012 i7mac mini.
