Will I need to upgrade the CPU to do this, or can I stick with the current one in the Mac Pro 1,1 and upgrade straight to 2,2? It’s the 2006 model, Want to flash the firmware so it can run El Capitan.

Thanks, Christian

I've upgrade my Mac Pro 1,1 to 2,1 with the original CPUs (2 duo core 2.0GHz) inside. The new CPUs will arrive in August, and I can't wait until then.
No problem at all.
Just follow the instruction in the below video. This is the newest instruction so far. I followed this video to flash my Mac Pro.
You will need another device to view it step-by-step.

I don't think you'll need firmware 2,1 to run El Capitan.
But anyway, it's easy and cost nothing to flash the firmware.
Just flash it then upgrade to El Capitan.

what OS were you on when you flashed?
I flashed the EFI a few years back to get to Mavs. Is this the same or different?

I was running OS X Lion when flashing.
Doesn't matter what OS you are using.
As Apple had changed the link to 2,1 firmware, the flashing app could not find the firmware from its old link anyway and you have to do it manually after the RAM disk has been created.

I got an issue, and need help.
All cpu and gpu are original, after successed to 2.1 the Lion os can be boot up with out problem. When boot up El, only shows a white/gray screen.
Downgrade to 1.1, then El os can be boot up smoothly.
Any idea? Thx

Did Re-install, no difference...

Then it must be the conflict between your graphic card and the OS.
Try another graphic card, perhaps?
I have a HD6670 and a Gigabyte GTX680 2GB, both work well in El, but not boot screen.
After installing El Capitan and confirm it working with the 7300GT, I turn off the machine and swap in the new Graphic card. The new graphic card is recognized and working well with El Capitan.
