Mac pro 1,1. This guy is selling this rig to me for 600 bucks, good deal? Thanks guys.

Depends what's in it.

Drives? (Number, make, capacity?)
RAM? (How many DIMMs, GB?)
GPU? (Make & Model?)
CPU? (total cores, clock speed?)
Monitor (Model, Age?)
Other PCIe cards?

If it's a low or mid-range stock configuration that's a hundred or two high going by EBay. But if there's some upgrades....
 
The rig comes with everything seen in the picture . 23" acd, track pad, keyboard. Im readiung over the specs and it seems pretty stock.

4gb of ddr2 ram
ATI Radeon X1900 XT with 512MB of GDDR3
intel xeon dual core@2.66ghz (5100 series)
ACD- 23"

My plan would be to upgrade this bad boy later on. His offer was much higher than this, and i talked him down to 600 bucks for everything. Im trying very hard not to impulse buy this - Everything is in good condition besides a little dust inside the pro.
 
Also forgot to mention it has 750gb set up in raid and possibly another hd set up for Time Machine.
 
As you'll see in other threads, MacPro prices are LOW -- particularly for a 1,1.
Throwing in the ACD is definitely helping, though.

You may want to cost out upgrading this machine first. DDR2 RAM can be expensive, if you want to max it to 32Gb. Replacement GPUs are not cheap either. Disk storage shouldn't be a problem.

My recommendation is that you consider what else you could get for your money. MP 1,1s can't upgrade to Mountain Lion, and they are not all that powerful. A secondhand 2011 Mini would beat it.

(Are you sure it's a 23" ACD? It looks like a 20 to me. (I've got two.))
 
In all fairness the OP could have 8 cores and 32GB of RAM for about $400 or so..throw a 560Ti in it and be good to go for a couple years..
 
lol, yeah im going to go view it and make the final decision. Im not sure if i will flip it but yea, i felt it was a good deal because it came with the monitor 3x750gb hard drives (2 in raid, the third set to time machine). The track pad, and keyboard w/installed software. I built a pc not to long ago with pretty good specs but always wanted a mac pro. Saw this with everything included on craigslist and was just very curious. Thanks guys.

I am currently running a 2007 2.66ghz w/4gigs of ram macbook pro along with a 2003 23" acd(my personal favorite for some reason). So in a way this is a slight upgrade. And couldnt i upgrade the firmware to work with mountain lion?

Installed software lists are something I'm hesitant about. Sometimes they just left an old version of whatever they were using that has since been upgraded on a new one. If it's a long list, it's probably pirated software. With hard drives, you have no way of knowing how old. I doubt they are as old as the computer, considering their size. 750GB would have been quite expensive in 2006. Overall decent deal I guess. See how the display looks when it's turned on.

Yeah, thus my smiley face... It's not like it's in the thousands or anything. I said that cuz I see those monitors here in Japan if old going for around $150 and I see MacPro1,1 with specs like that going for $300. Put the two together and... :D

As far as installed software, it's a zero value item unless he's transferring the licenses over.


Anyway, more important than considering the initial price is calculation what will be needed.

The three things I think this machine will require are:

A better GPU ($200 to $350)
More memory ($200 to $325)
And maybe a small SSD to boot from ($150)

If he goes low on all those things that's an extra $550
Plus $600 brings it to $1,150

Sound like a good deal now? ;) Didn't you just buy a 4,1 for $700? And i see 3,1 regularly going for $700 here in Japan a lot. ;)

I bought my 1,1 back in November for $350. It was a base 2x 2ghz with 1gb of ram and the gt 7300. The slow CPUs didn't bother me as I planned to upgrade them along with the video card and ram. Threw in an SSD too.

I found it better to get a cheaper 1,1 to upgrade as I wouldn't use the old components.

It's also end of year and people are dumping life cycle machines like crazy. Tax refunds will probably inflate prices like they do with used cars.

But I already have a 30" and 20" ACD. There is going to be an immediate 210 euro in RAM and if you want to count the moth old apple graphics card then another 219 euro. That brings me closer to 1200 euro..In short any used computer has costs associated it's up to the IP to decide whether the costs are acceptable.

If you search eBay (or Craig's) for another 23 Cinema, that's a pretty sick setup PERIOD. A nice 23" Cinema with all cables in "Excellent" shape is at least $250 shipped, the "Excellent" shape is the hard part cause on eBay you'll get 9 listings that are parts or suck and 1 that is Great...

For a starter old school system YES
 
Picked it up guys, couldnt help myself. Everything was in pristine condition. The acd was indeed 23" and its in absolutely mint condition (power brick doesnt even have scratches on it.) Is also nice that it has 1.5tb raid set up and a 750gb time machine hdd. So I felt it was a good buy. As far as upgrades go, im just doing a ram upgrade for the time being...gpu and everything else will follow a little further down when i find good prices. Thanks for the input everyone, much appreciated.

Also as far as installed software....just ilife and garage band type stuff. Was a fresh install otherwise.
