Hello, i've just bought a MP1.1 just to do some tinkering. I flashed it to the 2.1 aswell as installed OS X 10.7.5. When I was in the middle of installing, my monitor got black, i thought it was a faulty graphics card at first, but then I replaced it with a GT240, still nothing. So I tried everything (PRAM Reset, replace the PRAM battery,), still nothing, BUT I sometimes get it to boot to my SL DVD, which then wont go past the ,,blue screen''. Can anyone help me bcs i just bought a GTX680 for 250$ and I dont want to have purchased that card for nothing.

Sincerely,
John

Macintosh computers need special Mac graphic cards, you can't use regular PC graphic cards. A small amount of PC Cards can be modified to have a Mac EVI rom to make them run on a Mac Pro. In case you bought regular PC Cards, non of them will work. To my knowledge, you should be able to run later Mac cards that used to go on the MP 3,1 years later, such as an Nvidia GT8800 or a blue AMD/ATI 3870 Mac Edition from Sapphire. There was a flashed version on the 680 because there was a Mac Edition from EVGA. If you got PC versions, you should do further testing on the original Mac cards only. For future reference, please provide technical configurations, type of monitor & cable, ++ .... otherwise no one will be able to help you

Hello,
as for the GTX680 (EVGA Mac Edition), it didnt work because it was for an 64bit EFI (the MP1.1 has an 32bit EFI). So I bought an genuine Mac Edition HD5770. Now, the specs of the Mac Pro: 2.66 GHz Quad Xeon, HD5770, 32GB 667MHz DDR2 memory, 320GB HDD, 27 inch Acer ED273, DVI to HDMI cable. The Mac Pro does boot up now, but sometimes it does not. The ''solution'' for that is: Draw the power cord out, plug it back in, draw the DVI cable out, plug it back in. And then it works. But I downt want do do that honestly. Is the power supply broken?

Thanks for the help!

You are right, I do remember now, there was the switch to a 64Bit EFI. What pussles me, is the fact that the HD5770 came withe the MP5.1 in 2010, full four years later. Shouldn’t that be on the 64 EFI as well?
Other than that, I wonder if that boot issue of yours may come from the hdmi to DVI adapter cable. Does your Acer Monitor have any other port than HDMI? I never trusted the hdmi standard. In my book its always a trouble maker. unfortunately there has been hdmi sub standards out there with slightly different features that are often not properly documented. I would check on the monitor manual regarding that.

As for the HD5770: it didnt show an bootscreen at first (I thought that it will work). So I flashed it... now it does luckily. The Acer monitor does have an DVI port as well as an VGA port. Now it somehow does work... but now if I try to restore my USB disk to install OS X 10.7, it fails just at the end...

It's a 15 years old computer, did you change the CMOS battery?

Well, guess what happened: It doesn't start again...
I dont know whats wrong with that thing, maybe it is cursed ?. Who knows....
But now idk what to do. My ''fix'' does not work anymore, and it always seems that the installation of OS X 10.7 screws things up. But I don't want to always stick to Snow Leopard. I can upgrade to El Cap if I want, but I have Final Cut Studio 2 on here, which unfortunately doesnt work on El Cap as it uses Rosetta. Maybe the HDD is dead, as it makes some really, really loud noises which even my 2001 iBook doesnt make. My 2008 Aluminum MacBook did nearly the exact same problem (showing a white screen, not booting further). All i needed to do is to swap the failing Samsung SSD.

Regards,
John

So, I’ve just replaced the OEM HD5770 with an flashed 4870 and guess what: The problem is gone! I think the capacitors on the old card were bad, that’s why I thought it was the PSU of the Mac Pro. Luckily it wasn’t, and I got El Cap up and running. As for Final Cut Studio. I think I’m going to upgrade to FCPX or FCP Studio 3.
Thanks for the help!, I appreciate it very much.

So much troubles for a ancient cMP like that.
I'm lucky that I still have the following thing stored away
- The stock nVidia 7300GT
- A 80GB HDD containing OS X Lion.
- A 32-bit EFI El Capital Disk Image (dmg file which can be easily restored to a blank SSD/HDD)

And installing the following
- HDD with El Capital
- HDD with Windows 10
- Gigabyte GTX 680 2GB (flashed, no boot screen)
