Mac Pro 1,1 worth getting today

I'm getting my office supplies together before my office is built. i was wanting to know what the mac pro community thought about the mac pro 1,1 today. Ill be upgrading the cpus first off to x5355 and getting 16 or so gb of ram for it. ill be using it for elgato hd video capture and some video editing with imovie and maybe final cut pro later on. i already have a i5 mac mini that does the job of capturing video and then i use my e2011 i7 macbook pro 15" to edit the videos currently.

reasons for thinking mac pro
1. can have a raid 1 for video/ everything else backup.
2. 8 Cores!!!
3. Wanted a mac pro for years.
 
If you can nab one for free I say do it. I still have mine as my secondary machine and it's a champ.

Free would be amazing but sadly i would be looking at spending around $300-$350 usd. then another 50 for the cpu upgrade.

I probably still would if it's in perfect shape. I would top off the OS at Snow Leopard though.
 
maybe a mac pro 3,1 would be a better choice? they are only about 50-100 dollars more.
 
The 3,1 is generally a small step up from the 1,1/2,1, but the 1,1/2,1 vs. 3,1 could be a toss-up depending on your needs.

1,1/2,1 can run Mavericks/Yosemite quite easily by replacing one file (boot.efi) in an OS X installation, although it's not supported by Apple like on the 3,1.
Also, the 3,1 has something wrong where many modern AMD graphics cards have lower OS X performance. This means all of the Tahiti-based cards, the AMD Radeon 7950/7970 and R9 280/280X, perform better in a 1,1/2,1 than a 3,1 with Mavericks/Yosemite. You can tweak Mavericks to restore performance by manually removing the native Apple power management kernel extensions, but Yosemite seems more problematic.
 
Thank you all for the help. i ended up getting a mac pro 1,1 couldnt pass it up for 200 bucks. now time to get my cpus ordered and get my yosemite install moded.

$200 is a fairly good price if you can get the upgrades cheap. I hope you enjoy your new machine - let us know how the upgrades go. Congratulations on your purchase!
 
No, not worth getting

My company policy is that when the 3yr full next-day on-site warranty expires, the system goes to eWaste.

I've realized that is a good policy.

The 1,1 isn't supported by Apple. Why invite headaches? Send it to the silicon graveyard.
