Ok I own a Mac Pro (1 1)

Processor 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 32 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB

Right now I have OS X Lion installed and it runs like a champ. I know that there are later Bootstapped DMG's of the newer OS's that run on this but the problem I have ran into is the poor support for the video card and getting it to run correctly above Lion. I also have another video card laying around:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB

The question is would this ATI by any chance be supported n the Maverick or Mountain Lion Kernels?

No, the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and the Radeon X1900 are both unsupported in Mountain Lion and beyond. You will need a newer video card - Radeon 4000 Series or newer and GeForce 8000 Series or newer to have a chance of being supported in the latest OS. Check out the thread at the top of the forum here about PC video cards. Any modern video card will be a WORLD of an upgrade from your old NVIDIA.

First of all, why are you using the 7300 over the 1900XT? The XT has more VRAM and faster speeds. To run newer OSs, however, you need at least an ATI 3870 GT, which is still a bit slow for Mavericks. I tried running it on the newer 4870, which is GDDR5 memory, and it was OK, but it was not supported and the boot EFI was slightly iffy. You can get a 4870 for about $100 on eBay, but even better is a 5870, which I snagged for about $130 with cables and all. It was, though, a flashed card, but it performed beautifully.

You can use the ATI X1900 XT with mountain lion. I'm using it without any issue. Full acceleration. You can't go any hire with that card tho, you'll need a new GPU for Mavericks and beyond. Tho Mavericks works it's laggy.

Cheers

I'm using an ASUS ATI HD5450, it's a $30 card. You will not get the white startup screen, but it boots into OSX like a charm. I am running Mavericks, but it also worked in Mountain Lion.

You have to make some changes to one of the system files before the card will work, so you have to have the stock card in while you do that, but after just turn it off and remove the old card.

you could always do what i did. i obtained a 7970 off of craigslist for $125USD and flashed it to work with a mac. works like a charm. i also upgraded my cpus to x5355 for $50USD.

you could also do this with gtx 680, almost all Radeon 7xxx series cards. there are a few others that can be flashed but cant think of them off the top of my head.

You can also check out Nvidia 570 gtx so you could have future options. There is a user who installed an unflashed Nvidia 570 gtx on his 1,1 2006 Mac Pro. This is without the boot screen at start up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_IVZRFNwf8

That's a great cheap option w. DVI & HDMI, also available at my local Frys. Wonder if it still works in the most recent Mac OS 10.10.3?

I don't doubt it does. You can always check to see if you have that particular file first.
/System/Library/Extensions/ATI5000Controller.kext

Support for that card was only in the last several years so it should still be built in.

There's no more ATI5000Controller.kext file - it's AMD5000 now.

I tracked down a kext for the 5450 available from a hackintosh forum but that didn't work either.

I don't think the 5450 is a good option for Yosemite. I'll be returning it for a Nvidia card.

Hi Folks,
Sorry to jump in here but!! I have just got myself a Mac pro 3.1(2 x 2.8GHz, 8Gb 800MHz ram) and enjoying it. It's not the best but I hope to speed it up a bit, having OS Lion on an SSD that helps. I read somewhere that mountain Lion makes better use of available RAM.

My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB, it seems fine but there again I'm not a super game player, other then COD and the like, that I play on a PC. What would be a better video card??

Any advice or help very welcome..

Regards

Mel.

I have the same card in my mac pro 1.1- BFG 8800 (pc verson) but recently got a HD7750 1028mb. Most pc cards will work but you wont get a boot screen unless the card is flashed. I don't want to fiddle with flashing so i left the original 1900xt in for a boot screen. Anyway i guess it depends on your budget. I got the 7750 for $50 bucks in the box and all:)

Cheers
