Dear all:

This is going to be a long post but I feel the detail is necessary to get to the bottom of my problem:

I have a Mac Pro from 2006 that I had running Windows 7. Please note this is not bootcamped.

I tried to bootcamp it a couple of years ago, I couldn't get it to run or I was too impatient to get it to run so I think I found a way to get Windows 7 to run by reading somewhere that you had to change the Windows installer somehow. I did this and so then what would happen is:

Bong

Delay of about a min then monitors would come to life showing Windows splash screen (I think the delay was also due to me not setting up the third-party GPU properly and not running OS X at all.

I knew that eventually this way of setting the Mac up would eventually get me into trouble but at the time I just wanted to use the machine and it worked.

So from this point forward the machine did not act or display behavior of a Mac at all other than the bong - i.e. no grey screens, no ability to boot into safe mode, no disk utility etc. I am not a Mac expert by any stretch of the imagination but I believe therefore that I must have deleted some firmware or something akin to a PC bios by building the Windows installer in the way I did (don't ask me how).

Now here is the problem:

I believe the boot drive (which only has/had Windows 7 on it) has failed. This meant that a black screen with the flashing dash in the top left corner was the only thing that displayed.

I took this HD out, put a new one in that I formatted as OS X journaled, hoping to finally set this up properly and run OS X on it and Windows via bootcamp however now the following is happening with either the new drive or the old one installed and with either the original graphics card or the Zotac 2gb geforce that was working until the failure:

Bong

HD seeks

Monitors won't come out of stand-by

_____

Lion install disk in drive

Bong

Disk loads as if all is working but no displays at all - stand-by.

_______

I am using a PC keyboard.

Now holding down the left and right mouse button does eject the disc drive so surely it is still sort of behaving like a Mac.

As you can imagine I am pulling my hair out and clutching at straws.

Many thanks

Graham

You could try installing windows again on to a usb flash drive/hard drive just to see if it will still run windows. If yes then from Windows insert OSX install disk and see if it will run and maybe install OSX onto the hard drive.

Hi Verdejt:

Unfortunately as I think I had to make a 7 installer with 64 bit workaround I think I need to find this disc image. Alas I am searching to no avail.

Does anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks

Graham
