Mac Pro 2008 Kernel Panic help..

Hi, I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 running 10.11.6 and a AMD Radeon HD 6870 1024 MB card installed. Works fine most of the time but getting more and more Kernal panics, screen goes off and Video card fans go bonkers.



The Kernel Panic report is below. Would be grateful if anyone can decipher and tell me if its a driver or something more sinister?

Hi there, so what my hypothesis is is that this card has no real kext (kernel extension) support, so it tries to match up to the closest card it can which would probably be the Radeon 5870. So it runs off of the accelerator for the 5870 but likely because they aren’t the same they run into errors giving kernel panics.

If my hypothesis is correct the issue could be fixed with kext editing. But we won’t go that far yet.

From what I can see from the error, it’s definetly a driver issue, they show the AMD “drivers” in the errors. And somethings definetly having trouble or not matching up there. I have no clue what each code actually means but it’s likely a GPU identifier.

Another thing could be if you’re using an XFX card those and well known for having many issues on Mac or just not working at all.

Sorry I don’t know where to take you with this but those are my best guesses of the situation, if you can get any more info I’d be glad to help. For example what are you doing at the same time as the panoc, what happens on your screen when you get the panic, have you tried re seating the Radeon HD 6870 into its pci slot, of so are you using slot one or two?
 
Hey thanks for the reply. As for what I'm doing when the crash appears.....lots of random tasks. Nothing of note and nothing that i can think of that it running specifically that might cause it.
I have reseated the card in different slots but still the same error happens.
The machine and OS is definitely still running when the screen goes off.
I have to pull the power plug on the mac and also the card then plugin and reboot each time to reset it.
Its a real pain!
Maybe a new card is the best solution. Shame as its a great graphics card.

XFX cards are graphics cards manufactured by a company called XFX. When buying a gpu for Mac pro’s avoid that manufacturer as they rarely work go for SAPPHIRE when you can.

If you still have it, can you try plugging in your flashed/original gpu
[doublepost=1526659389][/doublepost]Oops I misclicked the post button, anyway try plugging in your original gpu that came with the 2008 Mac Pro which is likely a Radeon 2600XT and plug that into the Mac with your Radeon 6870. Boot up with the monitor using the ports on the 6870 (use DVI) wait for the panic then go back and unplug your DVI cable from the 6870 and plug it into the 2600XT and see if you an get any monitor output. This might sound complicated so I can go into more detail if you need
 
HI, Unfortunately i don't have the original, that failed completely many years ago!
Not sure where else to go other than to buy another card and try that....
