I'm hoping someone can help me out here. My Mac Pro 2008 (running El Capitan 10.11.6) randomly shuts down for absolutely no reason.

- screens (3x 30" ACD's) just go black and fan kicks on full-blast. (not sure if it's just the heatsink/ram fans, or also the video card fans (two of them) as well, as it's loud – fans going at 100%) – have to manually restart

Sounds like your video card is failing. That will cause a shut down and send the fans into high RPM. Do you have another video card that you can swap to see if that's the problem?

You could be right. Sometimes when I wake the machine, the centre or right screen stays blacked out unless I sleep and hit the keyboard to wake and then the screens all come on. I'll check tomorrow if those two displays are connected to the one video card
