Mac Pro 2009 OR Mac Mini 2014?

Hello people. I have a MacPro 2009, the settings are in the attached image. I am very happy with it but until now I have not got a REAL comparison with MacMini 2014, to know if it is worth changing my current machine for a MacMini, because I also need more space. Considering a MacMini at its maximum setup, can anyone tell me if it is worth changing?

Your workflow works with just 2 cores, integrated video and 16GB of RAM?

No. My MacPro works with 64GB. I just wanna to know if a MacMini 2014 with SSD and 16GB (so, max setup) can be better than my machine. MacPro consumes high cost energy too right? And I need more space in my room. Tks for any help.

I have a Mac Pro similar of yours but with 2 X5677 with SM951-AHCI 512GB. I have two minis late-2012 with 16GB, the dual and the quad - none could do the same things that my MP do.

I can use the dual mini to write, internet and some little VM stuff, but more than that is just the wrong tool for the job.

The quad is better, I love it, but for heavy stuff the Mac Pro is the right tool for the job. I can let my Mac Pro running intensive CPU jobs for days and I don't think twice about it. My quad mini becomes a frying pan after 1 hour.

That’s why he ask if your “workflow” can fit in that hardware

You never mentioned what kind of work you actually do with the computer you have now, so it's hard to say. I was using a 8-core 2.8GHz 2008 Mac Pro and ended up switching to a quad-core 2012 Mini for the same reasons you're looking into one (less power consumption, much smaller footprint). The most resource-intensive work I do is editing large photos in Lightroom and Photoshop (sometimes stitching several 42MP files into one huge panoramic shot), and without the cores and GPU of the Pro it just wasn't really cutting it. It worked, just not nearly as well, and I just recently ended up selling the Mini and buying a 2010 Mac Pro and using the money left over from selling the mini on a few upgrades for the Pro. No regrets.

Wait a couple of weeks before you decide. There are lots of fairly reliable rumors that Apple will update the Mac Mini very soon. Even if you still want a 2014 Mini, it will be cheaper once a 2018 Mini is released.

I'm sorry, you really are right. I use it for heavy jobs like Photoshop, Final Cut etc. So I do not have any more doubts about your experience, because as I said it ended up coming back to a certain MP? Obviously speaking in hardware, the MP seems to be much more aggressive.

I mean, youre talking to the Mac Pro forum here, clearly we’re gunna have a biased opinion, BUT even so, id definetly say youre much better off with a mac pro than a mini. The sheer hackability and upgradability would ensure its longer lifespan, even if mac mini has a few years ahead of if.

No doubt. I really love my minis, but every job has the right tool.

You can use the incorrect tool most of times, but some jobs are just not adequate to the mini. Any CPU and GPU intensive job is not a fit.

Perhaps you should investigate a 6,1 Mac Pro. It sounds as if it meets your requirements.
