Hi, i performed the upgrade of a 2009 Nehalem 2 x 2.26, first i did the firmware from 4.1 to 5.1 and then the CPU's with 2 x X5677 @ 3.46ghz,i didn't delid the cpu's and i used washers. i first tried with CPU A only and once successful i proceeded with CPU B. The mac boots up, no red lights but bizarrely CPU B doesn't show up in system report nor the ram on CPU B. I tried to tight a tiny little more but fans get spinning right away so i backed up. I tried to reset pram and smc but still no go. It's really weird also because macs fan control app shows temp and fan speed for CPU B ... anybody has a clue ? i've never red about this behaviour on forums :(

EDIT : i swapped cpu's to check they both worked and they do but while checking macs fan control i think i'm missing some sensors for cpu B ?

Check the Socket B

I just read the edit, and you know both CPU's work, so it must a socket issue as said above, check to see if any bent pins in socket B and as they are spring loaded kind of, make sure there are no pins stuck down in socket, some do if they get bent as they can't be pushed up when CPU is removed.

Check the Socket B
you mean to check for problems on the pins? i'll have another look but they seemed ok

thx i already swapped the cpu's and they both work so as h9826790 says it could be the socket but shouldn't the mac refuse booting ?

Please stop using washers. It is not the easy option as people think. Time and time again people report problems like these when washers are used.
Delidding is extremely easy to do with very little, if any, risk. In fact the risk of delidding is far, far less than the risk of damaging the CPU socket when using washers.
Get a cheap vice from Amazon or your local hardware store and just pop the lids. It’ll take you 5 minutes.
That’s assuming you haven’t damaged your CPU B socket beyond repair.

so , i checked the socket and everything seems ok .The thing i don't get is that the mac boots without any red leds nor fan spinning at full speed , everything is as supposed. The only thing is that the heatsink B is dead cold so it means the CPU isn't powered at all, i'll try delid , if that doesn't work maybe the x5677 don't always work on dual cpu machines , go figure ...

The chance of having improper CPU installation is much much higher than you got an incompatible (but not damaged) X5677.

I have dual X5677 processors in my 2009 and they work perfectly. The issue here is that you used washers and didn’t delid. Hopefully no permanent damage was done. Good luck!
