Resolved Mac Pro 2009 upgraded to 5,1 but Can't boot to High Sierra

Hi all,

I upgraded my Mac Pro 2009 yesterday to the 5,1 firmware but can't seem to get it to boot/install high Sierra as it says it needs a firmware update.
I've got a Radeon ATI HD 5770 1GB graphics card in there, also tried with the original GT 120 & a HD 4870.

It shows in the info specs that its running 5,1. Any advice?

If you only flashed the firmware 4,1> 5,1 , the firmware will be MP51.007F.B03 now.

The installation of High Sierra comes with another firmware upgrade to version MP51.0089.B00
This is normal.

For the GPUs:
-the OEM GT120 will work fine for the upgrade to HS
-afaik the HD5770 is compatible with HS too
-afaik the HD4870 is only compatible up to El Capitan or Sierra..

To be 100% failproof, I'd install the GT120 and install HS .

Why should you try to go around it?
Generally speaking firmware upgrades come with advantages and will make your Mac Pro less vulnerable..

I suppose you got the High Sierra installer as a usb installer or downloaded in the Apps folder on a existing OS e.g. El Capitan ?

If so, just start the installer and let it do the work

EDIT: With the GT120 installed, no other GPUs

Aye i've tried running the installer, it lets me boot to the High sierra installer but just showing this -

Have done, still no luck :/ Tried the GT 120 but keeps crashing as soon as i login

Did you shut it down and afterwards keep the power button pressed until the light flashes/you hear a long tone?

I certainly did, tried it a few times before posting on here

could you post a list of all hardware installed?

Try a triple NVRAM reset:

power it on and immediately keep pressed Command + Option + P + R until you hear the chime for the 4th time.

I guess it was just having a funny moment, just tried it again unplugged the power and held the power button and it FINALLY worked

What you did is called "SMC reset", I guess.

so the FW update worked and you're installing High Sierra now?

I certainly am, its definitely been a "fun" experience haha
