Mac Pro 2009 Vs Macbook Pro M1

Hi guys, I need your advice please. I've been out of the Mac buying game for many years (as you no doubt can tell by the age of my Mac Pro).

I'm considering buying a Macbook Pro 16" M1 Pro 16gb with 1 TB storage. How does this machine compare in performance to my antiquated 2009 Mac Pro with these stats?

I'll mainly be using the MBP for video editing on Premier and Final Cut and general everyday use.

Should I go for the MBP I mentioned above? Or should I add anything more other than the 1tb storage?

I'll still keep the Mac Pro though as it does look great. Maybe make it in to a coffee table!

So it's the 16gb for me then as my current Mac does the job great as it is.

Now to wait for good deal for a MBP in the UK. Maybe wait till the M2's are released.

Yup, a MBP will provide better bang for your cash. Not to mention specific media engines to help the workload.

With optimum apps M1 is just sooooo sick compared to even 12 core Intel Mac Pro.

But you are so close now to M2 that it wont hurt to wait.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping the 2021 models drop in price by more than 10% when the M2 models are released. I'll then pick one up 🙂

That deal with curry’s is better than what Amazon U.K have on offer for the 1TB version (£2349), so yes definitely it’s a good deal for us in the U.K. for sure.

If the M2 16" is released AND is at a reasonable price (as in not affected by the ridiculous choices made by our "Leaders"), return the M1 and buy the M2. Also have a look in the Apple refurb store. These machines are indistinguishable from new ones and come with the same warranty/return window etc. If a config I want is there I almost always get the refurb instead of new.

Great plan, especially the bit where you won’t open it. I’ve seen far too many posts (more on other sites than here, to be fair) from people who intentionally use buying and refunding a computer as a rental–which is a real abuse of customer policy since the product is worth considerably less to the shop once opened and used.

I have a 2010 MBP 17” over on the table that was ‘retired’ and brought out recently. It is still fine for internet use and just writing on, but not much else. Then there is my 2015 MBP 15” which has been recently replaced with a base model 2021 MBP 14”, and is my last real user before the upgrade. The M1 Pro is just in another league, and you are going to find that using it is a real pleasure, no waiting for things to get done and snappy in every way. Without going overboard in pricing, the base MBP 16" with 1TB unless you do high-end work should be plenty enough. If you need more storage, think of getting something external, with more TBs, and less money than the APPLE option.

Yup. It's not my style to do anyone over - not even the shops. It's just not right. But at the same time, I don't want to do myself over by buying an item and then seeing it either drop considerably over the next month or something better catching my eye

Don't know about Currys, but doesn't JL offer two years warranty on most electrical items (compared to one elsewhere)?

I wouldn’t have got the MBP 14” just recently (a couple of months ago now) if I had wanted [to wait for] an MBP M2. A few reasons; I got a good deal on this ‘open-box’ and couldn’t pass on it. A new MBP M2 may be more money with the exchange rates Yen-Dollars (or whatever currency) getting even lower. Didn’t feel like waiting, some work to be done - and we still really don’t know when the MBP M2 is coming. The MBP M1 Pro has enough under the hood, runs cool, amazing screen, and ports, I don’t feel from what we know about the M2 Pro I’ll be missing out on much in my use.

Yeah, you might watch Best Buy prices as they are known for putting the M1 MacBook Pros at a great sale price.

I also nabbed an open-box one, in flawless condition and with all original accessories, for $1600 after tax. This also included AppleCare+ as it's included in my totaltech membership with them. Excellent purchase for sure.

Much more enjoyable to use than my 2010 Mac Pro which has a 12-core setup and 64GB RAM.

Don't know about Currys, but doesn't JL offer two years warranty on most electrical items (compared to one elsewhere)?

I'm not sure. If do, and the price difference isn't too big, I'd go for the 2 year warranty.
