Hello - I have a question regarding upgrading the 2010 5,1 GPU

I currently have the radeon 5770 installed and want to upgrade (mainly to speed up C4D)

what is my best option? I am wary of non mac cards - leaning towards gtx680

**also** - can I keep both cards installed? if so, is there a correct way to connect?

best for doing what?
relay depends on what app you use and what budget you have.

I want to speed up c4d performance and render time

also wondering if two different GPUs (have 5770 - shopping for upgrade) can be used simultaneously and if that will provide any benefit

I dont know c4d so cant help to much, google benchmarks on it see which cards it runs faster on then look at them.
If the app can use dual GPU's (and has a gain from dual cards) then it will use them.

once you know what kind of card you want check here for compatibility in case there are problems.

macvideocards is well respected and provides support or get a pc card which will work but you will get no suport if you have problems.

Cards have power, space, and compatibility issues so the answer is "it depends".

Whether or not cards benefit from dual GPU acceleration (or even 1 GPU acceleration) varies. Even software that claims to use GPU acceleration may only use it for certain functions that you may or may not use, so "it depends" there too.

+ fast cards tend to need two power cables so for two fast cards you will need to get extra power from somewhere.
