Mac Pro 2010 graphics card failure? HELP!

Hey

Today my Mac Pro crashed , when I rebooted there was a weird sound coming from the inside, upon closer inspection my graphics card fan was making some funny noises.

The Mac Pro made the boot sound but the monitor was black. Still nothing after a few re boots. I then gave it a good blow and used a mini blower to clean any dust out. Still nothing.

Does this sound like my card is dead? Or the fan? The fan is still spinning but I'm getting nothing from it. My mac seems like it's booting up, I'm just not seeing anything. I'm trying to rack my brain to think of someone I know with a Mac Pro I can test the card on.

I have to get my mac running ASAP, with in the next couple of days.

I can't wait till a replacement fan is sent since it won't be here till late feb.

At the moment my only option is to upgrade the card to a better 7950, get it fast tracked, and pray that it is my card. Then try and sell my 5780 when I can get a new fan

Anyone got any advise for me?

The fan's bearings were probably failing then stopped and cooked the GPU, you blowing it out likely brought it back to spinning mode. Need other card regardless from how you've described what happened. As the member below has said dont waste money on another fan you need a new card.

I agree.
I think you would be wasting both time and money to replace the video card fan, when you already have no video.
If the fan failed (or just wasn't spinning normally), and let the card overheat, then replacing the fan, by itself, is unlikely to "heal" the card.

On my 2010 the 5870 card fan started making squeaking noises. Eventually it began intermittently stopping. When that happened the card overheated and shut off causing the monitor to go black.

I lucked out in that it happened just before the end of Apple Care. The less-than $200.00 spend on Apple Care really paid off.

depending on your OS and your tolerance for non MAc parts, you could probably drop a PC card in there from your local computer store today.

I am running a 650ti with no problems, just no boot screen.
