Hello all, I am new here. I just recently acquired a used 2010 Mac Pro in seemingly excellent condition. The system has been upgraded by the previous owner from a quad core to a 6 core.

Specs:

2.93GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

16GB 1066MHz DDR3 (4x4GB)

ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB

Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD (No other drives installed currently)

Fresh install of macOS 10.13.6

Everything seems to run flawlessly except for when attempting to wake the system from sleep. The flashing power light will turn solid and I hear a relay click, but the screen stays black and the video card fan does not start spinning. It doesn't matter if I have manually put the system to sleep or if it goes to sleep on its own. I am forced to hard power off the system and then turn it back on.

Things I have tried:

  • Reinstalling macOS
  • Different video card (same exact type)
  • Removed all other drives from the system
  • Changing cmos (or nvram) battery
  • Reseating every RAM module
  • Reseating CPU tray
  • Memtest86 (Passed two full tests with no errors)
  • Resetting SMC by unplugging system and waiting/holding power button
  • Resetting nvram with keyboard
  • Blowing out any dust for good measure

I am at a loss for what to do as I just bought this system with plans to upgrade it and turn it into my daily driver. I should also mention, sometimes the system will not power on right away after hitting the power button. I need to hit it once, hold it down for 10 seconds, and hit it again, and then it starts. I know I can disable sleep but I would really like it work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This seems very familiar...I believe I had the same inability to wake from sleep on one of mine, and it turned out to be a failing power supply. It was very hard to isolate, but I eventually replaced the power supply and that took care of it.

I've got an extra power supply kicking around that is confirmed working. PM me if you want to buy it...
