So up till about an hour ago, my Mac Pro 2010 was working fine, then everything froze, so held the power button down to turn it off, waited about a minute, switched it back on the fans spun up high for a few seconds and the machine went off. nothing

After pressing the diagnostic button, all I get is an amber 5V light, I've tried unplugging and reconnecting everything, checking connectors, but it doesn't make sense. any suggestions?

Or other thing is the only way to get the fans to whirl again for a few seconds is to remove and re-insert the CPU tray

Old computers just die sometimes. Probably not a bad PSU, but I'd start with the easy stuff. It isn't chiming, so it isn't completing the POST. Do an SMC reset, and test the clock battery. If the battery is bad, replace it. After that start with creating a minimal system (remove PCI cards, extra drives, all RAM but 1 stick) and see if you get a chime. No boot? Swap your RAM into a different slot, and if it doesn't work, swap that RAM stick. From there, you can re-seat the CPU to verify it hasn't shifted. If none of that works, you could have a failed CPU tray, failed logic board, or failed PSU.

so I've tried a minimal system, and even swapped out the CPU tray with a spare I had, same result.
ive also replaced the clock battery. it just does a short high fan span for 3 or 4 seconds then dies.

You can also try without he gpu and drives, you will hear the chime.

Press the smc reset once (the button close to the rtc battery).

So I pulled out the apple technician manual, basically the board is getting power but not enough to complete its diagnostic check, hence why the amber 5v led is only on when the button is pressed, I've ruled out the back board as the issue, as the red led's don't flicker on when the power button is pressed, leaving just the PSU left.

So I've pulled the PSU and it's pretty clogged anyway, so I have one on order. Hopefully this is the problem!
