Mac Pro 2010 upgrade from 1 cpu to 2

If I can find to buy a mac pro "slate" (the thing where the cpu's and memory stay) from a standard 2 cpu's Mac Pro. Can I upgrade a single cpu Mac Pro to 2?
Basically change the the entire slate where the cpu's rest.

And the replacement tray with say, two 2.66 xeon chips is the same price as what I could buy a refurbed mac pro with the same specs on apple's site.

Shoot, ebay may be a better way to do that!

The cheapest option would be to bargain shop on eBay and try to find a processor tray on there (for about $340) and then try to find some good ES processors for about $1000 a piece. It's possible that you can upgrade your single-2010 to a dual 3.46GHz for under $2500, far less than the $4400 or so that OWC wants to charge you. Better to do it yourself, and with the 2010 models it's much easier due to latched processors (the 2009 duals were a b*tch as I understand). Good luck in your endeavor.

I would say take your 2.8 quad and go to a 3.2 hex read this thread. much more cost effective easy to do.

if you do this you could sell the machine at a profit.. then buy a 2010 dual quad and go to a dual hex.


more work and a two step process but most likely easier to do and in the long run cost less.

besides the quad 2.8 to hex 3.2 is a huge boost at a low cost. after doing just that you may get done all your work without anything else to do.

Guess the 2.66 to 3.2 hex would be a bigger boost, huh? Eh, my eyes are too weak to do it myself, and I'm not sure how much my local AASP would charge for the privilege.

...tempting thought, though.

Wonder if the chips will drop a bit in price once the sandy bridge e comes out?
