Mac Pro 2010 vs Mac Pro 2012

Hello,



I am a video editor using Avid, Adobe Premiere and Mocha Node and am caught between two Mac Pro's to buy, could anyone give me some advice or insight?



The first is a 2010 Mac pro, quad core 2.8ghz while the second is a 2012 Mac Pro 3.2ghz quad core. Both have 8GB DDR3 Ram (which I'll upgrade for rendering capacity) and the same 1024MB graphics card. Naturally, the 2012 model is more recent, but is double the cost. Is the price worth having a more updated architecture or is the difference so slim its not worth the money?

No difference other than processor, those parts are interchangeable, and age of machine even then depending on when the 2010 was produced it could be within weeks of the 2012 in its age. With the money saved on the cost of machine invest in a w3680/x5680 3.33 six core processor or the w3690/x5690 3.46 six core, a t15 screwdriver to remove the heat sink and some good thermal compound to put on the new processor. Best thing you will ever do for a machine dedicated to rendering aside from a Sata III card and fast SSD if you are doing lots of disk access when rendering.

So there is no real disadvantage buying a 2010 model pro? I was tempted to avoid it from its 5+ year age, or is it no more 'future proofed' than the 2012?

The 2012 is simply a name change from a 2010 they are the same machine with bumped up specifications. And as I said that machine, the 2010, does not have to be nearly five years old depending on the date of production it can literally be one day older than the first 2012 that came off the line. That of course depends on how Apple worked the production schedule perhaps they stopped a month before putting different changed firmware on the supposedly new model (that is identical to old except for the stock standard shipped processors in it) the 2012 to have it appear as such.

i've used both a mid 2010 Mac Pro and 2012 Mac Pro and both are similar in performance and stability. They have the same architecture The 2010 Mac Pro is fine if it helps you save some money. Both uses the same Xeon Westmere processors, the ram and GPUs are interchangeable You also add USB 3.0 cards, add SSD blades to get SATA 3 speeds.

For quad core cMP, you can even save a bit more, because it's virtually identical to the 2009 model (Mac Pro 4,1). You can just buy the cheapest one (it cost less then $700 few months ago on ebay), and then flash it to 5,1 . Upgrade it to W3680, up to 56G RAM (for best performance, 3x16G is the best option), and a much better graphic card (or even dual graphic card it required).

The real difference between the 2009 and 2010(2012) model is the dual CPU 5,1 use normal CPU rather than the de-lidded one on 4,1. So the self upgrade will be much easier. However, if you only aiming for a single CPU cMP, unless it's really cheap (or still have warranty), IMO, there is no point to pay more but get a virtually identical machine.

Most numbers are wrong.

Both 5,1 using the same PCIe 2.0 standard.

And there is no "evo 970 pro" exist.
