I usually boot up my Mac Pro 5,1 with OS 10.8. I wanted to create another bootable drive with OS 10.13. I started the usual process with a USB drive but stopped when it said that a firmware update would be required. I wasn't expecting that to happen. What does it mean? I was afraid to proceed and possibly mess up the Mac Pro.

Wow, I was totally unaware of this! If I do the firmware update, will the Mac Pro still be bootable with the OS 10.8 drive? What version of the firmware (if any) would be recommended for a Mac Pro that is being set up to boot in either OS 10.8 or OS 10.13?

It's one of the topics of the post I've linked, please read the first post to he Mojave BootROM thread.

Even if you were going to run 10.6.8 forever, anyone that values security will upgrade to 144.0.0.0.0 to mitigate the Spectre and Meltdown security exploits of the Nehalem and Westemere microcodes.

Thanks, but I don't have time to sort through 88 pages of posts. I actually don't care about security on that computer because it's used only off line.

Why you have to read 88 pages if everything is written on the first post?

There are dozens of improvements with the firmware updates, from performance improvements to support of bootable NVMe and APFS.

Hi friends, I recently got a donation of a Mac Pro 2.1, everything turned on but no image, I have an FX 4500 that I thought wasn't working, I put it on a Windows PC and it worked, it showed an image and ran the system, but I wanted to know What could be causing the Mac Pro to not work, it turns on, shows the boot sound but doesn't show an image of anything, I've already tested booting Windows 10 32bit, Linux 20.04 32 bit and the Lion disk but still without success, I would like your help to try to test something that may be causing it. Thank you in advance for your help!
