Hiya,
I find that my Quad core 3.2GHz cpu is not quite fast enough. I need a 6 core.
So far these the options I have found are

Intel Xeon X3680 3.33GHz
Intel Xeon X3690 3.46GHz

I know that the X3690 will be faster, but how much? Are there any other options for cpu upgrades?

Yes there are. X56xx CPUs will also work in single, as well as dual CPU, 5,1 and flashed 4,1 Mac Pro applications. An additional benefit of the 5600 series is that they will handle 64GB of RAM vs. 56GB in the 3600 series.

Thanks Lou.
So which 56XX CPU's will fit in my mac pro? I really would like to upgrade to 64GB of ram in a year or two!

^^^^As far as six core being faster than a quad, it depends on the applications you use, and if they are multi-core aware. AFAIK, the only difference in operation on a Mac Pro between a W36xx and an X56xx is the RAM that the CPU will recognize.

Thanks again mate.
Well, I use Logic with Native Instruments etc so the more cores the better.

Memory compatibility with Mac Pro 5,1 Dual X5670

I recently upgraded my 2010 MacPro dual processors to dual Xeon X5670. I'm wanting to now upgrade the memory, and I have several questions that I'm uncertain of.

1. Is this memory compatible :

"Kingston ValueRAM 64GB (4 x 16GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Server Memory (Intel Validated) Model KVR16R11D4K4/64I"

2. Will the machine not work properly if I later decide to add additional memory with a different brand name like Crucial for instance.

If this is not the appropriate place to have my questions answered, please direct me to where I should be or a resource that can provided some type of "MacPro 5,1 X5670 memory compatibility chart or info" thanks!

I just upgrade the CPU in my 2010 5.1 from a Quad 2.8Ghz W3530, to a Hex 3.46Ghz W3690. I scored the CPU on eBay (used) for just over $300. It's been working like a charm for a few weeks now. GeekBench results more then doubled... Plus the CPU is now utilizing my 1333Mhz RAM now, where as before it was only running at 1066Mhz. I get better results running Tri-Channel (with both CPU) of course, so I'm running 3x8gb.
