Mac Pro 2012 - Multiple GPU Issues

Hello,

My tower decided to suddenly become unstable. In C4D w/ Redshift render, if I enable both the display card and the extra ones for rendering, I get random crashes during use. Disabling the display card seems to fix the issue. The cards are all 1080Tis. The tower is still on 10.12 as I'm scared of upgrading it to HS.

The odd thing about it is nothing has changed recently apart from adding a new display.

What might cause this?

Hmm. I doubt it. The errors are usually something along the lines of “make sure your graphics drivers are up to date”.

They’re all powered by a decent external 850w psu. I’d be surprised if it were power related, but what do I know

As an update, here is a crash log file. It seems to die trying to connect to an IP, isn't that odd?

The IP address looks like Maxon.net. It might be trying to update the graphics program drivers to support your new monitor.

Double-check your CUDA version and compatibility. If you've updated CUDA driver but have NOT updated NVIDIA Web Driver to the same parallel version there are incompatibility issues.

Example: the latest CUDA 410.130 for Mac would possibly not be compatible with the latest Sierra driver (likely 378.05.05.25f13). You may need to be on an older CUDA version, such as CUDA 387.178 driver for MAC, CUDA 9.0.222 driver for MAC, or CUDA 8.0.90 driver for MAC.

This issue is not documented well and this is not explained with the CUDA installer or with NVIDIA Web Driver appropriately. Was supposed to be cleared up with High Sierra (and Mojave) so the build numbers would correspond, but that may never happen if Apple does not approve the Mojave drivers.

The IP issue may be trying to report the error directly to Maxon. Adobe works nearly the same way. You may need to update to High Sierra to resolve that portion of the error or turn off diagnostic error reporting.

There are tons of reports of 5,1's (and 4,1>5,1) already on High Sierra and Mojave, so I'd take those bricking reports with caution. Many are related to failing hardware and/or SPI flash issues. Believe they MIGHT be partially related to Windows and/or boot camp install issues and how installs and/or updates are performed by Windows. There are threads more dedicated to this discussion and would suggest going through them if you have concerns.

You'll have more "issues" getting to Mojave than you will High Sierra. Your current GPU(s) would not have drivers available in Mojave.

FWIW, I'm on an authentic MP5,1 mid-2012 with 140.0.0.0.0 firmware and have updated through High Sierra 10.13.6 17G5019 without issue. SOME prior updates (software and firmware) will require an EFI GPU to be installed in the machine.

Unfortunately, it's not documented well. You may have better luck if someone on a forum has posted a branched map.
