MP 6,1 Mac Pro 2013 in 2019 is it still worth it?

Hi,

I originally started thread in "The "I just ordered/bought/got my new/refurb Mac Pro" thread [merged]" but received reply that new thread would be better :)

As Apple is planning to introduce 7.1, stores started ditching 6.1 and I found that the new MP with specs: 3.0GHz 8-core, 16 GB, D700 can be bought for 2700$ (on APPLE Store is for 3999$). Is it worth the money in 2019?

Also, I know it is hard to guess, but is it possible to predict how long it will be getting macOS updates?

I am wondering if it is a good to buy it and have it for next 7-8 years. Currently I am using rMB 13 from 2013, after almost 6 years on it I started feeling frustrated in using it. I was considering rMB 15 2019, I even bought one (which I returned because screen was defected) but as I stopped having business travels and rMB 15 is currently on the same price point as MP I am considering it as a better long term device.

Personally I am daily user with rMB '13, but at work I am programmer (with high spec Dell P720+t470s), I would like to feel much closer to the working standard at home (with having macOS which is much more pleasant than Ubuntu). I don't think I will use any rendering/photo editing programs, however I want to start coding in xCode in much higher capacity (to switch it from current programming work).

[doublepost=1566979004][/doublepost]Not worth it. Get a Mac-Mini instead, for $2700 you can get the version with maxed-out processor (6-core), maxed-out RAM (64 GB) and 1TB SSD. And if you ever feel like getting some graphics power, you have the thunderbolt 3 ports to connect an egpu to it.

2700 $ for a 6 year old computer, no thanks.

  • 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz)
  • 16GB 2666MHz DDR4
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet using RJ-45 connector)
1899 $ for this configuration and you have margin for a great eGPU until 2700 $.

This makes the plan a non-starter, since you don't want to end up getting stuck on an outdated version of macOS that can't run the latest Xcode.

BTW, order Mac Mini 2018 with 8GB RAM and buy a Crucial RAM kit (say, 32GB for $150). Don't pay massive Apple Tax for RAM.

$2700 is a lot for 6 year old tech. Theres no guarantee that Apple will support the 6,1 much longer than Catalina. Regardless if it was sold into 2019, it was released in 2013, and Apple typically doesn't support their computers beyond 7 or 8 years after release.

Time will tell, of course, but buying the 6,1 now is a gamble on how long it will be supported. Unless you're buying used and at a significantly reduced price, it's not worth it.
