I got this problem on a 2013 Mac Pro if I tight the screws all the way in, the ones which holds the CPU itself it does not boot if I loosen them a bit it does but crashes... What is the recommended tightness:)?

I tightened all eight CPU bracket screws all the way down. I don’t know how you’d get the pressure on the CPU and heat sink even otherwise. Anyway, I’ve swapped the CPU twice (from six to ten core and from ten to 12 core) and have had no issues.

Make sure you’re putting the bracket on in the correct direction. You want to make sure the ends of the bracket (where the screws go) are sticking up a little so that you have to press them down to get the screws started.

I bet you have a bent or broken pin in the CPU socket. Try to bend it back and if that doesn’t work see if you can find a used CPU riser card (eBay has them for $400). Either way you should be able to fix it cheap enough for it to be worth it.

Also 10.14.4 Mojave tend to have this carsh mentioned above so might that be the case?

You are also supposed to tighten them in the order specified in the Apple tech manual.

The torsion on the bolts is crucial.

I know that is the case with the 4.1s and not with the 5.1s but how about the 6.1s?

Please. The torque to fully tighten the bolts down is so low that it probably wouldn't even register on an inch-pound torque wrench. Have you replaced the CPU on a 6,1? Oh, right, I didn't think so. The bracket that holds the processor in place has spring-loaded arms that must be tightened to fully and evenly load the processor. I mean, I guess you could tighten the bolts half-way, and the computer might boot, but you certainly wouldn't get good thermal contact between the processor and the heat sink.

It is clear from the wear marks on the bracket arms that the bolts were fully tightened from the factory.

I used that video to disassemble my computer and to gain access to the CPU but "finger tight" doesn't make any sense with respect to the 6,1. The spring-loaded arms of the CPU bracket wouldn't even be touching the PCB and wouldn't create enough pressure to spread the thermal paste evenly and create good thermal contact between the CPU and the heat sink.

The fact that different levels of tightening are causing different types of failures on your computer clearly indicates the problem you're having is either with your CPU or the CPU socket/riser card. It's not a Mojave thing.

Well, let's look at the evidence. You've tried everything short of tightening the bolts all the way and you either can't boot or you get kernel panics and/or crashes.

I've pulled my stock six-core CPU out, replaced it with a 10-core E5-2690v2, tightened all eight CPU bracket bolts fully, and the computer booted and worked perfectly. I then removed the 10-core processor, replaced it with a 12-core E5-2697v2, again fully tightened the bolts, and again everything works perfectly.

At this point what does it hurt for you to try tightening the bolts fully? It's not like you have to "reef" down on the them with a wrench or anything. They'll just stop turning when the bracket arms touch the PCB and that's when you stop tightening.

Wear marks ? That implies that there will be " movement" and so become "worn" .. that cannot be. . as that blue stuff on the heatsink bolts is threadlock glue.

That's a great picture. Too bad it's not for the 6,1. The arrangement is completely different for the 6,1. On the 6,1, you're tightening bolts into spring-loaded arms that clamp a bracket that goes around the CPU. Those spring-loaded arms bend as you tighten them. You're not relying on the bolts to provide direct pressure to the CPU and the heatsink; you're relying on the spring force you're creating by tightening those bolts to provide the pressure.

And, another thing - "finger tight" in the example you've provided still has the screws bottoming out. For the 6,1, finger-tight is subjective, but if you literally just used your fingers to tighten the bolts, you wouldn't provide nearly enough spring pressure, and the processor could definitely slide around and/or overheat.

It's an apples-to-oranges comparison. And it's frustrating that you're trying to argue that you're right when it's clear that you haven't seen the CPU mounting arrangement in the 6,1.

I definitely fully agree that over tightening the CPU is a bad thing. It's just that in the 6,1 you're not directly tightening the CPU or the heatsink; you're tightening into a spring-loaded bracket that surrounds the CPU.

Here's a picture of the back of the riser card. The yellow arrows point to the bolt holes where the bolts go that clamp the CPU to the heatsink. The red arrows point to the bolts that tighten this bracket to the one on the back of the board that together clamp the CPU into the socket.

If you look at the yellow-arrow holes, you can see where the metal is worn down from the screws that clamped it previously. The only way these wear marks are completely hidden is if you clamp the bolts fully. Plus, in the picture here, you can see that the yellow arms aren't flush with the PCB. In fact, the tips of the arms (the round section where the bolts go) isn't parallel to the PCB unless you press down the arm so it touches the PCB.

The red arms are in contact with the PCB (and fully tightened) because the CPU is tightened in place. However, the board isn't yet fastened to the heat sink (which, in the 6,1, is the huge triangular extrusion that runs through the middle of the computer).

All you're doing when you tighten the eight CPU bolts is bringing those red and yellow arms down so they contact the PCB. Once they touch the PCB, you stop tightening. It just takes a little more than literal "finger tightening" to compress those arms. If those arms weren't spring-loaded (i.e. they were already touching the PCB), you could tighten them with an impact wrench and you still would be exerting exactly zero pressure on the CPU.

In other words, it's the spring action, not the tightening of the screws per se, that provides the CPU and heat sink clamping pressure.

OK, guys. For those that are uncertain - for the MAC PRO 6,1 the CPU Board screws (four inner and four outer ones T10) and also the standoffs for the CPU board have to be torqued to 10.5 inch pounds (in.-lbs.) or 1.2 Newton metres (Nm). This means the screws on the CPU board have to be screwed in ALL THE WAY and then have to be tighteded *VERY GENTLY*. Also mind the cross pattern as shown and be careful as one of the CPU Board holes has a golden plating - be sure not to damage it. See instructions from MAC PRO 2013 service manual attached.

BTW: Also for MAC PRO 4,1 / 5,1 screwing in the CPU screws ALL THE WAY is neccessary - as also these screws will bottom out and are spring loaded.

You only have to be careful if you have a MAC PRO 4,1 DUAL CPU model (which requires delidded CPUs) and you are installing CPUs with lids. In this case screwing in all the way can damage your board as the thickness of the lid will cause excessive stress to the board (because it was not designed for that).

Thanks for the clarification @mgaa80. This is what I've been saying all along with respect to the 6,1. Also, 1.2 N-m is a VERY low torque. The lowest torque that my smallest click-type torque wrench will register with any repeatability is 2 N-m, but I do have a beam-type wrench that'll go lower. The point is that if you don't have a torque wrench, you'll be very close to the correct torque on the CPU socket if you tighten the bolts until they just bottom out and then stop.

Those are the screws for the CPU riser card and not the ones for the CPU hold down bracket (because the CPU is not considered to be replaceable by itself), but they appear to be the same size screws. So I think we can infer the same torque specs should be used. :)

Yes you are correct. Apple only talks about the outer four - not the inner ones - but they indeed ARE the *exact* same screws. As the same torque specs (1.2 nm) also apply to the graphics card's spring loaded bracket it is safe to assume that the 1.2 nm also apply to the inner T-10 screws on the CPU board that hold the CPU in place. Again - tighten until they bottom out and then not any further.
