Just needed some help with my decision making.

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 2 x Dual Core Intel Xeon 2.26GHz only 4gb Ram and I would like to give it a bit of an upgrade I mainly use Photoshop, Illustrator etc and I would like to do some gaming aswell so I want to drop in a 4870 gpu. Is this Possible? If it does not what should I do in order for it to work ie upgrade processors and add more ram.

Tried searching for a similar thread but couldnt find any answers.

Thanks in advance guys!

Well in that case then ill opt for the 5870.

The real question is if I did put one in will it be sluggish especially because it only runs on 2x 2.0ghz with only 4gb ram?

Really what you need to do is identify the bottleneck in your system for your particular use and upgrade that bottleneck. It might be the CPU, RAM, or video card, but nobody on this forum will know which, we can only guess.

A new video card will definitely help a lot with gaming. It might help with your Adobe software or it might not, depending on a lot of things.

Extra RAM will help if you typically exceed your RAM, but if you don't typically exceed your RAM, then extra RAM won't do a damn thing at all.

A CPU upgrade would probably help everything a little bit, but gaming will still be hampered without a better video card.

Awesome thanks for your help. Keep you posted to see how it all goes.

Sorry to ask a newbie question here.

But would a regular off-the-shelf HD5870 work in the Mac Pro, or does it require a firmware flash?

The 3GHz Xeon 5160 for ca $80 outlay is a worthwhile upgrade for you
