Hey all, newbie here

I've got a tricky one for yall. I picked up this Mac Pro last week for $20. Pretty good deal considering the graphics card still works. But alas for that price it had to come with a catch. The previous owner already mentioned it didn't had a hard drive but other than that he was clueless. Didn't even know what model it was. And neither do I. The model # is A1186 but says it's a mac_3.0 which is apparently a built to order model? Anyways with no hd that means no OS. So after some research I decided to try and load Lion (OSX 10.x.x) system recovery software onto a CD. To boot into recovery mode via CD you are suppose to hold down the power button until the optical drive comes out and load the cd from there. But when I hold down the button it flashes rapidly (approx 2-3 times a second) then screeches one single long tone/beep. Then chimes and loads up the white/gray screen with flashing question mark folder. Now according to the service manual this means that no ram is detected. BTW this thing came loaded with ram. Every slot was filled with various types of make and size. And a red LED diagnostic light would pop up on DIMM2 of riser card B. To make things simple I took out all ram except for the Kingston FB-DIMM 4gb and placed one in each of the first slots closest to the gold plated chips on the end. Get the same error message. Now assuming the RAM slots on the logic board are dead would it be possible to desolder the dead ones and throw on new/working ones? I'm quite handy with a soldering/desoldering iron. Just wondering if anyone has done this before. Here's a youtube video of me going over the problem if it helps.

looks like a 1.1 not a 3.1

3.1 looks like this, ram tray arrangement is different

also what service manual are you reading? iv never heard of the things you mention (for both 1.1 or 3.1 from the service manual)

I think you better slow down a bit.

1) ident your cMP correctly. Your A1186 is cMP 1,1, not 3,1.

2) for cMP 1,1, the max OS is 10.7.5 (Lion is the correct choice for you indeed)

3) what you did is for FIRMWARE resotration, not OS re-installation. Firmware is a very small software that store on a chip on the logic board. OS is a much larger software stored on the hard drive. Your firmware is working good at this moment, don’t try to destroy it.

4) if your Mac can actually work but just no OS. All you need to do is just hold option key during boot, then insert the Lion disc, select it and install the OS accordingly.

A couple of things I can offer:
  1. As A1186 Mac Pro is either a 2006 or 2007 model year and Mac OS X supported ended with Lion. The 3.0 probably refers to the CPU speed which could possibly indicate a 3.0GHz dual dual core (2006) or dual quad core (2007) configuration.
  2. To open the optical drive you hold down the mouse button, not the power button.

Not to hijack this thread but...so a year 2008 2.8ghz Mac Pro model #A1168 is still only a 1,1 or 2,1 ? I just bought a used one off eBay thinking it was a 3,1 (early 2008)....the seller didn,t identify whether it was a 1,1 or 2,1 or 3,1. he's on vacation until 1/5/2018 to reply back...

Sorry to make you scare. I should make it more precise, OP’s cMP is indeed a 2,1, I was too lazy to search and explain. To distinguish 1,1, 2,1, and 3,1. You can simply check the EMC number follow by the A1168 on the sticker. A 3,1 should show 2180. Since OP’s video shows EMC 2138, that’s actually a 2,1. But my last post info still valid. 2,1 also max at 10.7.5. Since OP is not asking about hardware upgrade, 1,1 and 2,1 makes no difference in this case.

if you want to know what mac you have just use the app Mactracker or google the SN etc..
the macpros are vary well labeled one of the few good points about them is they do say what they are on the outside
works with most computers

^^ Thanks guys for the great info. Mine (bought from e-bay) indeed is a 2008 model 3,1 Mac Pro. It's got the EMC 2180 #.....

My mistake, I did not realize the 3,1 shared the same model code as the 1,1 and 2,1.
