Guys, please help, recently my Mac Pro will restart ( not just shut down ), The shop tried to clean all the dust inside out, espeically from the CPU, lots of dust, it works fine for couples of day until yesterday, I noticed that when I tried to watch video or you tube, or transfer file from hard drive to hard drive, it will restart automatically, but it is fine if I just do something like download movies ( it can run over 24 hours )

p.s. the shop said he checked with the power supply is fine !

question : will it be the video card ? both 2 fans in the front and 1 in the back is running !!!! many thanks for any info !!

I had the same problem over the summer with my macpro3,1. Would just randomly shut off several times a day and reboot in the middle of me using it.

After cleaning out the video card fan (with can of air), hasnt happened since.

I have a 5870 btw

Hi,
many thanks for the info, that's " the V card fan " is the only thing I haven't clean yet ! THX again !

Typically the OS will restart or shutdown by itself when it detects a physical problem and is trying to prevent damage.

It could be a dirty or defective temperature sensor. The computer thinks it is too hot and shuts down to save itself.

Thx, just clean the video fan, but still the same, it restarts sooner if I open Photoshop or transfer file between harddrives..

what if really the temp sensor is the case, can I replace it myself ? or it has to bring to the shop ? thx for more info

I'd push to ask how they checked your PSU. Sounds like a PSU issue.

Oh, I don't wanna go back there, I live in SF Richmond district , the store @ Geary Blvd and Spruce. They have my unit for 2 weeks, first he said was the Video card, then it wasn't the card, he mention he took out the power unit put it in other unit, It was fine......! Then he said the ram/riser plate (one of them ) something wrong, as long as I use the other one with the exact same ram, the machine runs day without any problem.........And of course I believe him ....His store just fix/repair MAC only...........But guess what ....same S....happened !!! Then I found someone on craigslist, he said maybe the CPU fan too dirty, and yes, he opened up the CPU , tons of dust inside ( mean the first guy / the store didn't clean the unit for me and charged me $120 !!! ). Then the machine run fine and I continue downloading movies for 3 days.....until Thursday, I tried to transfer file to other hard drives ( external and internal drives ) it started to restart !!!! And as said watch you tube or any video from my unit or open Photoshop , it will restart for sure....please help !!!!
