My internal DVD drive on my Early 08 MacPro has died.
I picked up an Apple USB Superdrive after being told it would work with a MacPro. When I got it back to base and plugged it in, no joy.

I've now read on the box it's only compatible with Mac's without a built in DVD drive. :(

When the nMacPro delivery gets down to 1-2 weeks I'll probably jump on one so it's not a waste (in the long term).

Until then, anyone got a way of getting this to work?

Thanks

Beardyman.

Not worth "fixing" or trying to save a dead drive. Optical drives are cheap as dirt, or they were last I checked :p

$10-15 gets you a good working dvd-rw duperdrive from Newegg or eBay. Just make sure is an IDE drive. Replacing the bad optical drive with a new one literally is no more then a 10-20 minute job if your slow.

Only special thing you need to do is to take the faceplate off of the CD tray otherwise it wont open the front door of the mac pro. Easy to do!

Pretty much any drive will work, I have an LG superdrive in my '08 from my old gaming computer.

Sorry, I didn't make my issue clear - in preparation for (eventually) buying a nMacPro I bought an Apple external USB superdrive knowing I'd have to get one anyway when I get a nMP.

Rather than spending any money/time on my 08, I just wanted to know if anyone has found a way of getting the MacPro to accept an Apple external DVD drive. Apparently it's only the Apple models that are the problem, 3rd party unis work fine. I agree, my bad for not doing my homework

Oh, by the way, I'm running 10.6.8 if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Thanks MacsRgr8 - this is exactly what I was hoping to find. I did find a few of the other versions of this hack but all seemed to be full of "sometimes works, didn't work for me" type comments.

What I was after was the definitive way to do this.

Thanks again, much appreciated.
