Hi everyone! I just acquired 2 Mac Pros that I was convinced were G5’s. I was over in the PowerPC section, and the fabulously helpful pros over there helped me figure out that I actually have 2 Mac Pros.
Soooo... yeah... I have a 1,1 & and a 3,1.
Both have DVI display ports, and I do not have a DVI monitor to test them on.
What decent, but cheap video card can I get to test these on?
Thanks in advance.

I guess you‘d be better off just getting a DVI-HDMI (assuming that‘s your monitor‘s interface) adapter. Those are rather inexpensive....

OMG! HA! Now I feel dumb! LOL. I feel like I should’ve known such an adapter exists... but I didn’t. This is exactly why I came here...1st response is the winner!!
Thank you!!!!!!!

If either of the machines still have the original cards they shipoped with, then it's not really suprising that they have no video.

The cards were 2 years old when the machines shipped and they also had an incredible failure rate. I knw Apple had an internal recall actvie for the Radeon 2600's in the 3,1's. You may have to search ebay for a card that is old enough to work for both machines.

http://www.macvidcards.com/faqinstallation.html. Would be a good place for info as to what will and won't work. I have not purchased a crd from them personally so cannot vouch for that. Over the years different forum members have had varying degrees of luck.

I looked up some cards that may be compatable...but, I was wondering if maybe the currently installed Radeon 2600, or the Nvidia P345 (not sure if that is the actual card #...only ID i can find printed on it) from the other machine maybe just don't like, or arent compatable with the HDMI adapter? I don't have a DVI compatable monitor to try it out with..

The P345 is Apples's ID for a GT7300 - The original card that shipped with the 2006 Mac Pro.

Allrighty then....New issues!! I tried the video cards in the other Mac Pro 1,1 and they both work with the HDMI adapter...FANTASTIC! Put the 2600 back in slot 1 of the 3,1 and nothing. Slot 2, nothing. Slot 3...annnnd...Something!
Video showed right up! (I haven't put an OS on this machine yet. Waiting to make sure all is well 1st). shut the machine down, and rebooted... hit the power button...fan on video card spins up...and Mac shuts off!! From there forward, as SOON as I push the power button, the machine fires up, then shuts right off immediately. That's where I am at now.
Any suggestions anyone? Did the power supply go bad? Did I mess it up changinf PCI slots? Help!! Help!!
Thanks again in advance! Y'all ROCK!!

Just quick information:

if the red gpu, amd hd2600 is ok then it works in 1.1 and 3.1

the gpu with passive heatsink, gt7600 works only in 1.1

nvram resets are helpful when swapping gpus, hold the keys for a long time and let it chime 4 times. Not kidding, there is a reason.

Thank you for the suggestion, but the machine will only stay on for .05 seconds. PRAM reset doesn't seem to help.

Try testing/changing the CMOS battery (SMC reset). It's cheap and easy to do.
Both of the machines act the same way? Shut down immediately after power up?
No, the 1,1 seems to be acting fine. I wanted to get the 3,1 going, but the power issue is new. I just changed the CMOS battery and it is still doing it. Thank you.
