I wouldn't waste your money on the 960, especially for the 3,1 MacPro. Barefeats did a round up on video cards for the 3,1 a couple of years ago and the benchmarks clearly show that your 3,1 is going to gimp that graphic cards peformance.

I doubt you will see much difference in performance in your machine when you compare a 680 to the 960.

Better to save your money.
 
That mini 6 pin to 8 pin cable should be fine. I use basically the same cable for my 280x.

You don't even know what application he wants it for. I don't think a 3,1 will "gimp" it at all, except in some very CPU dependant games. For compute/cuda type stuff it will be good.

And also a GTX 680 is faster than a 960, so I don't know quite what you mean there either.
