Mac Pro 3,1 - Kernal Panics after 760 GTX install

Help!

I recently went to replace the ATI 6870 in my 2008 Mac Pro.

I purchased an MSI 760 GTX 2gb OC. I thought the TDP on it was 170w so the two 6 pin and the Mac Pro would be fine to power it.

Now, whenever I put any load on it (a game of sc2, mine some doge), it will kernal panic.

I am on 10.9.1

I have not installed any drivers from online. I wasnt sure which nvidia ones to install, if any at all.

I have reset the PRAM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry, this is truly bad advice.

The 2GB limit had to do with OpenCl. It was an artificial limit imposed by Apple and discovered by Netkas and myself. It no longer applies to anything.

Deleting ATI/AMD drivers is great advice....for Windows. Not EVER done in OSX.

CUDA drivers only affect....CUDA. No effect on anything else. Since games don't use CUDA, no part of issue here.

In 2008 Mac Pro first thing to check is if fan is spinning.

Leave side off case and run machine. If fan doesn't spin faster during GPU intensive apps, move to slot 2.

Hi, I have an EVGA GTX+670 FTW 4GB in slot #1 and indeed when playing CoD4 I don't hear any increase of fan-noise while side is open. In BC Win8Prox64 the GTX immediately starts spinning.

What is the difference between the two slots and why does slot#2 works better for a GTX PC-version?

Setup:
#1 EVGA GTX-670-FTW-4GB for PC
#2 Apricorn Velocity X2
#3 Nvidia 8800GT for Mac
#4 spare

I moved the card to PCI #2 and it seems to be running better now. I can hear it spin up under load.

I am still having it not perform as well as I would like, but that might be the program itself (sc2).

I will also need to re figure out mining as I am getting less than with my 6870.

I will keep an eye on the panics and see if they are gone.

For what it's worth, this:

seems to indicate the driver failed to read some piece of GPU memory (probably a register). Those 0xffffffff values for CFG, which I'm assuming is PCIe config space, mean the driver can no longer talk to the GPU, which is a pretty fatal error. This makes sense given that your fan wasn't spinning up, the GPU probably overheated to the point where it completely locked up or turned itself off or something.

One more quick question. I am not seeing the mining rates I would expect. Can this be related to the no CUDA drivers? Does mining (Asteroid App) use CUDA?

EDIT #1: Just remembered its CUDA miner.... Will see how it works after installing CUDA driver.

EDIT #2: No change in KH's after installing CUDA. I am still seeing about half of what I was seeing with the 6870...

Nope, still having issues. Getting a lot of crashes in both windows and OSX.

Mostly while trying to play a games.

Not sure what to try next.
