Mac Pro 3.1 Octocore, 670 GTX gaming performance?

Hello!

I would just like to see if anyone with a similar setup to mine, can shed some light on some gaming performance in Bootcamp.

I have an octocore 2.8 Ghz, 10 GB RAM Mac Pro 3.1.

I'm considering buying a GTX 670, primarily for gaming in Bootcamp.

Anyone have any performance figure for that? Maybe compared to like an i7 2600k system or something?

Mac Pro 2008 is more like extreme edition Core 2 Quad than i7 but the GPU is more important. Best look for PC benchmarks...common PC gaming CPUs include Q6600 which is not as fast as Mac Pro 08 CPU.

I doubt you will find many benchmarks. There might be some users who have paired them here on Macrumors and hopefully they speak up. Problem is you have a cutting edge vid card that will be paired with a Core2duo based system and most review sites just won't go there (not many people wold still have Core2duo based systems who will pony up for a 400+ video card). Hopefully someone here has tried it to get you the numbers you are looking for....

Yeah, I figure that there won't be many benchmarks out there, but maybe someone on this forum with real world experience, with around the same setup as I'm thinking about doing.

It's just if it's not worth it, picking a high-end video card, for an kinda outdated computer.

Gaming in windows is about 80% dependent on the GPU as long as your processor is a decent one and not older than say 2007. You'll find the odd game that stutters a bit but basically if your question is "Will putting that GPU into this Mac make it good for gaming?" the answer is yes. Even old 1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pro's are decent gaming machines in windows when you put a modern GPU in there.

This is particularly true for DX11 games, which rely heavily on a powerful GPU for things like tessellation and compute.

I'll put the Asus DCUII Top 670 in it then - supposedly one of the quietest cards out there - thank you very much.

And then I'll slowly build up an Ivy Bridge gaming desktop as well, for when Watchdogs is out

I'd avoid the top as I've heard issues with it (I got the non top and it's been running great)

Question really is, what games are you planning on playing? For BF3, it runs butter smooth on ultra settings with 2x msaa
