I think the Mac Pro 3,1 ( 2008 ) has a unique PSU , so you cannot use a PSU from any other Mac model .

here is a list of compatible APNs for the PSUs of the Mac Pro 3,1 ( 2008 ) : 661-4677 , 614-0409 , 614-0410 , API6PCO1X , DPS-980BB A , 614-0400 , 6614677 , 6140409 , 6140410 , 6140400 .

Verify the EEE code before installation if you are not sure . Compatible EEE codes for the Mac Pro 3,1 ( 2008 ) Power Supply are X54 and YLZ .

Hi thanks for your reply. My power supply is 614 0409 with the EEE code YLZ.
The one I'm looking at is a APN 614 0400 with the EEE code X54 so I guess they are compatible?

You've got it ! Have fun !

Be gentle when you remove the four hex PSU fasteners , as they have been known to have a generous application of Loctite from the factory and are easy to strip . Use an elbow shaped 2.5 mm hex driver to control leverage when you need it .

Excellent . And please only use a compressor to clean your PSU , preferably with a water trap . 60 PSI at a distance of 6 inches ( 15 cm ) . And let it dry for at least 24 hours before reinstallation , as water is naturally found in the air hose lines .

It can be harmful to use hair driers , vacuum cleaners and canned air to clean electronics . Compressors are also a green method , environmentally .
