So I'm down to my iPad as a computing device. :(

Early 2008 MP, 2.8ghz octo core, 6gb, 8800 GT. 10.7.4. 23" ACD.

Everyday apps are: FCP 7, color, motion, lightroom, and photoshop, in that order.

She's run like a dream until the last few days, when the graphics card fan started running full throttle 24/7, regardless of load.
Then video related apps begin to slow down. Fcp needs to be restarted almost any time I do anything, and motion completely locked up the computer altogether. A motion export that should take 5min says it'll take 30+ hours. Fcp render that used to take 2min now takes 45. Quick looking a video almost always results in an error message, and when one does play I mostly see the first two frames and it hangs.
Now it's at the point where I have to run one app, save it, restart the computer, run the next app, save it, and restart again before daring to launch the next one... Simple quitting and switching over renders the computer too slow and beachball-y to do anything, even check mail.

Given the gfx card fan issue and that the computer mostly goes crazy when video is involved, what could be going wrong? Is the there a new card in my future or has OSX just gone wrong?

Help!

bake it or chuck it

obviously try permissions repair, etc first

try running a GPU test like Uningine or OpenGl View and if that brings artifacts or crashes, it's time to preheat the oven and get out a small phillips screwdriver

bake it or chuck it

Hahahhaa ;) I love it ;) Well done

Or, you could reflow it :p (As if everyone has a station)

Bahahahaa. Can't tell u how many laptops have hit the oven over at my buddies place.... works..... but still funny as hell to me ;)

Alright macvidcards, after some fiddling and reading the extensive 3,1 video card upgrade thread on here I just brought home a 6870 and a 128gb ssd for a fresh lion install. Between a fresh system (LONG overdue) and a non faulty and much more advanced video card I ought to be good to go. Now the burning question... Anything I should know before dropping this bad boy in?
