I am long time pc user looking to switch towards apple first time.
i will be jumping up from old c2d duo system to 8 core xeon 3.0ghz. do you think it is still a viable upgrade in 2013 & relatively fast machine to handle multitasking & programs like photoshop, illustrator, gaming etc. i know new imac and macbooks are alternative but they are expensive, non-up gradable compare to mac pro that is selling for 550$ - 600$ which is bargain in my opinion. Just want to hear thoughts on whether to go for this or get 2009/10 model for little more!

Specs are as follows

2008 / 3.0GHZ 8-CORE
12GB RAM DDR2
1TB
512 8800GT

I'm still using my 3,1 Mac Pro (2008 Dual 2.8 Quad-core Xeon / 14 GB RAM)

I'm running Illustrator, Photoshop, and other Adobe CS programs, along with Corel Painter. I usually have at least 3 of these programs open at once, sometimes more, and I don't have a problem at all.

I'm also running three screens. I've got two 23" Apple Cinema Displays and a 22" Wacom Cintiq. I've got an ATI Radeon 5770 that handles these just fine.

I don't game, so I can't advise you on that. But for everything I do (professional graphic design and illustration), the 3,1 works great. Without a doubt it's the best computer I've had (I've had five or six going all the way back to the Mac IIfx in 1992).
