Mac Pro 4.1 Booster fan speeds

Hi all!

I just got a Mac Pro 4.1, everything works, but I think the booster fans have some issues.

The Booster fans start at 1100 rpm, and after some time it goes up to 1600 rpm ( No stress on the CPU ).

I cant stand the sound of the fans, and I think something is wrong. I tried to reset SMC and PRAM with no luck.

My next try is to remove dust, I hope that works!

is my rpm's normal??? What do you guys think.

With no applications open the rpm just gets higher and higher up to around 1600rpm

In SMCcontrol i can only make the Fans go faster now slower, I will try to post a screenshot.

Maybe I should try a clean install, I just took the harddrive from my old Mac Pro over to the New one and startede the computer, everything seems to work, i just have this small fan problem.

1100 rpm is the normal 'idle' fanspeed for BOOST fans on dual-CPU mac pro.

1600 rpm does not seem normal without any stress on the processors. Are the other fans speeding up, as well? What are the speeds of INTAKE and EXHAUST?

I will check when im off work. But As i remember the other fans was pretty normal in terms of rpm.
 
I'm running a 5,1 with dual W5590s and a GTX 780 so it would run a wee bit hotter than stock. I was using SMC FanControl but recently switched to Mac Fan Control because of this thread:

And, I do like it better.

I don't think the OP has an issue, but fan control software will allow him to regulate the fans himself.

Thanks for your reply. If I turn on the computer and wait 20 min. The booster rpm will slowly get higher and higher, I think that's weird. Maybe I have a dust problem??

It does seem weird.
I don't have the dual-socket, though. My experience is with the single-socket 4,1. Default fan speed for BOOST is 856 rpm. And it never goes higher unless the CPU cores are within 2C of ProcHot (according to iStat). ProcHot is likely 100C, and the quad-core Nehalem chips reach that temp easily under full load.

If you are not maxing your CPU cores, then I would not expect the fanspeeds to rise. The BOOST rises along with the EXHAUST and INTAKE, so please report what those fanspeeds are. If they remain at their minimums (600 rpms) while the BOOST rises, then that would be really strange.

download opengl extensions viewer from the app store

restart your machine and then open this app and run a test or 2

do you fans settle down?
 
Get "Macs Fan Control.app" and change those 2 from "auto" to "sensor based"

1.) PCI Fan: based on PCIE ambient: Start 36C Max 55C

2.) PS Fan: based on PSU1 Secondary ...: Start 52C Max 90C

You might need to tweak the settings a bit but I like it quite.

Then add Macs Fan Control.app to you login items

Done.
 
I just tried Macs Fan Control with your settings, for now it helped! I'll how it goes through the day tomorrow :)
