This is a weird one for me. I am not sure where to start because I am not seeing any kernel panics being generated in the Logs folder. The computer seems to work just fine when I am using it and I don't allow it to lock, turn off the screen, or sleep. I just installed the latest security patch for 10.14.6, and this may have made the problem worse.

In the past, crashes with automatic reboots have occurred due to issues with cpuPowerManagement. Now, I have no idea because my only cue to the system hanging or crashing is the hard disks shutting off. The power LED will pulse slowly like it would if it were asleep, and the fans are still running on the system.

Any attempt to wake the machine fails, no input on the keyboard or mouse will work. Pressing the power button instantly turns the machine off.

I am unable to see if there are any crash messages on the screen when this occurs, that may be because I am using an RX 580, but not the Sapphire card that supports boot splash.

I can collect any information necessary and perform any steps needed to further identify/fix the problem. I have attached the most recent kernel panic (this was prior to the security update i applied today), but the behavior of the system when it produces kernel panics like the attached, the computer is sitting idle and it probably has to do with CPU power management as I had mentioned, but it will recover and reboot to the login screen. Currently it seems to just sit on a black screen.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have another kind of GPU for test sake ?

I remember problems with the AMD Drivers where one must adjust the amount of Ports in a .plist for HD7xxx R9/xxx for sleep issues.

Another thing is usb hardware. Hubs that prevent sleep and such.

Nvram and Power Managent reset done ?

I have a few older Mac cards (4870 and GT 120, neither of which are fully compatible with the newer OSes), also have plenty of PC based cards that could be tried.

I also do recall the need to modify the ports for the card. I cannot remember if this was ever necessary, and this problem wasnt present initially.

As far as USB devices, I have my 30'' Cinema Display USB ports and an SD card reader connected. Mouse and keyboard are bluetooth.

I will clear the NVRAM and SMC and leave it to go to sleep again.

I suppose its possible this bug is finally affecting me with this quite large security patch I just installed.

You could try the GT120, it just sluggish work on EFI Drivers but for a quick test run it fits.

I know the card gives at least a gui in Mojave

But remove the AMD Card physically for this test.

Ok, I will give that a try and use it for a while and see if this symptom persists.

The computer will not turn off the display or go to sleep either by timeout or using the Sleep option with the GT 120.

I tried it again with a 550Ti and it goes to sleep and wakes up. We might need to do the port fix and see if that makes it stop crashing

Well, so the gt120 is not useful for this test. Will write that down.

Btw interesting that a Fermi GPU runs in Mojave. Thought nvidia support started with Kepler.

Strangely, some of the Fermi GPUs IDs are present inside Kepler drivers and work partially for acceleration, but no METAL apps work. I think that @netkas found it last year, if I remember correctly.

GF100 kext is in extensions.

I tried a cheap Nvidia Quadro with Fermi with no luck earlier this year.

btw. this CFG_FB_LIMIT = 0 setting is still in AMD9500Controller.kext/info.plist

Maybe we still have this -must-know-amount-of-ports-bug-to-get-to-sleep bug

for details

Oh, believe me, it doesn't run well. Might be because there are no web drivers installed but not a very great experience, but it does seem to behave. I didn't note if the computer correctly identified the card or not.

I disabled SIP and applied this fix. I havent observed it acting up yet... I will consider this resolved and will update in a day or so.

Thanks for the help

I'm having similar issues with a 4,1>5,1 with a MSI RX 570. Was crashing during sleep before and with 10.14.6 latest patch I'm getting the black screen, sometimes even while using it. I assume there is some kernel panic that would show with an Apple GPU installed.

Yeah, something is funky with that patch. If you haven't given the CFG_FB_LIMIT edit a go, it's worth a shot because things are looking better for me now. There might be a crash screen that it is displaying that we can't see, but from what I could see no kernel panic was being saved to logs.

Still want to use it another day to confirm issue doesnt come back.

All, I am reopening this thread as it seems the problem has resurfaced.

Still get crashes at idle, similar CPU power management error as before. I dont have the dump file for now. I did the kext edit again and ran Kext Utility after and rebooted. It turns the screen and disks off when its asked to sleep, but the fans continue to run. I can't wake via keyboard or mouse, and the last time I hit the power button to wake it, it came up with a boot splash and then the login screen. It wasnt a full reboot, though ive seen this one a few rare occasions on Macs that are resuming.

Update: Attached latest kernel panic I have, which looks to be from about 20 minutes before i started troubleshooting. No crash message came up from the abnormal return from sleep

I ran EtreCheck, if what it reports seems accurate. VirtualBox is causing a pmLock condition that is crashing the machine.

Diagnostics Information (past 7-30 days):
2020-03-23 19:37:48 Kernel Panic (19 times)
Details:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f859449f0): pmLock: waited too long, held

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB

2020-03-18 17:02:58 signpost_reporter - High CPU Use
Executable: /usr/libexec/signpost_reporter

Extra tidbit, if the below is failing, sleep will definitely not work properly, ACPI controls such functionality.
Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(6.1)

I am going to use the VBox uninstall helper script and completely remove it, I had some issues with stability of VMs in the past so for the most part I stopped using it altogether on this machine. Might push me to find a different solution for VMs in the future.

This might fix this issue, or their may be other factors. I will update.

This ended up not really changing anything... I did get a newer more useful KP though, full log attached, summary below

I am officially at my wits end with this thing... I am officially out of ideas to troubleshoot. Hoping someone can interject.

To eliminate it being the fact that my install is super screwed up, I installed Mojave (10.14.6 combined) that i pulled down tonight from Apple's website. Created a USB installer then booted my Catalina MBP from it, with a blank SSD in an external dock. I let the installer do everything before its first reboot, then powered down the MBP and placed the SSD into the cMP. It finished up the installer with absolutely no hitches and I was able to set everything up. Bluetooth was a bit annoying since the SMC/PRAM still had memory of the devices. Just deleted and readded everything to fix that.

Did some testing to invoke a crash. Set computer to sleep and it crashed right away on a fresh install, same errors as KP in above post.Great. So its definitely a hardware issue, or a common Mojave bug. I guessed the latter.

Poking around on Google searching up the backtrace information, I found this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ince-10-14-4-10-14-5-10-14-6-updates.2176692/

First thing I came across in the thread inidicated the user's initial issue was nortbridge heatsink, so I checked mine, and the temps, seems fine there...

I started combing through this thread until I found a post remarking on the official Apple fix being a 10.14.6 Supplemental update. I have read in varying places this should in theory show up in Software Update. I don't recall Supplemental 1 or 2 showing up there on my old install. Odd. Ran Software Update on the fresh install, and it didnt find it. Just 2020-001 Security Update. I downloaded 10.14.16 Supplement 2 from Apple's website. It installed fine and rebooted. First few tests of the system worked perfectly!

I thought, great, I can just fix this on my old install. Only I cannot, as it says none of the drives in the system are eligible for the update (implying something horribly amiss, or the fact that i did indeed install that at some point already). Whatever then, just gonna go back to the new install and be done with this. I realized I was sitting at 140.0.0.0 Boot ROM because i haven't done a High Sierra>Mojave upgrade since it first came out. Just used the USB installer I already made earlier and popped the update on and it went on with zero issues. Now at 144.0.0.0.

Was going to copy files from my old SSD to the new one, and figured I would test the system a few more times. Broken again, same exact KP, same exact trigger, only there is no third party extensions or VM software of any kind on the machine anymore. And this is AFTER applying Apple's official fix that they included the Mac5,1 system in as being affected.

Absolutely insane.

If anyone has any ideas whatsoever, I am all ears. I will try them if I haven't already. I think 9 hours of troubleshooting is enough for one evening..

Thanks..

Edit: I am chasing down lead on CPU replacement being the ultimate fix for this. I wouldn't be opposed to it, just wondering what else can be done, if anything.

Did you ever find a solution for this?

I'm having a similar issue with my 5,1 on 10.14.6 & 144.0.0.0.0 getting KP's when asleep.

I think it might be connected to parallel for me as this is normally sleeping too when this happens.

I read somewhere that people had fixed the issue by changing the cpu to the X5690 from the W3680. It worked for three days since I changed it but tonight it has crashed again whilst it was sleeping.

Used to be pmlock waited too long on the old cpu this time it was an unresponsive processor cross call timed out

I think I will have to try leaving it to sleep with parallels shut down to see if it happens with only macOS running.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'd be all ears.

Cheers

Edit to say i am running a MSI Radeon HD 7970 3GB GPU if this could be connected?
