So... I have an expensive Radeon RX 580 Pulse 8GB edition. I used it to install Mojave PB on a Mac Pro 4,1, after updating to the latest firmware (089) with 10.13.6, with no issues.

Today, for some reasons I pulled the RX580, and re-installed the GT120. And rebooted into High Sierra... and then Mojave.

Surprisingly I didn't get any warnings about unsupported graphics cards, or anything...

As far as I can tell, with minimal testing, there is no issue. It seems to work fine. There is no metal support listed in System Profiler, but ... I haven't seen any actual issues.

Who'd a thunk.

Are there actual things I should try to confirm if it doesn't work?

Yes it works using the EFI driver built into the card's ROM (same should go for the ATI 5770 and 5870). It's unaccelerated though so you will likely notice a sluggish UI and graphics glitches.

If you want to test that there's no Metal support then launch any of the new apps--News, Stocks, Voice Memos, etc. They likely won't work.

Really doubt Apple will try to prevent you from installing a non-Metal GPU after the installation. They'll probably only do that during the install.

how did you upgrade to sierra with a 4 1 mac pro? I thought it's not supported on 4 1?

I also upgraded my CPUs to w3680 (I think that’s right) Xeon at the time. Couple of years ago. The westmere CPUs might be required.

A 4,1 can be flashed with 5,1 firmware so you can run Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave. It's a long read, but all the info is here: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,852.0.html

Read the later pages for more recent instructions.

I think it's more appropriate to describe this kind of 2009 Mac Pro as 5,1. Because the firmware is 5,1, reported as 5,1, perform as 5,1. Still calling it 4,1 is very confusing. If want to emphasis that's a 2009 Mac Pro, then use "2009" should cause less confusion.

Well, I did point out I had installed the latest firmware. Guess I assumed that everyone with 2009 Mac Pro has already updated to 5,1 ;)

Bad assumption.

4,1>5,1 works nicely to identify.
