Hi.

Have just got finished installing my new cpu in the Mac pro (x5690) and have flashed it to 5.1 firmware and all that.
I had 2 sticks of 4Gb DDR3 ECC 1066Mhz ram installed in it and it ran (and runs) fine with them, but I have bought a used 16Gb DDR3 Load reduced ECC 1333Mhz ram stick on ebay (check link for model) and when installed alone the mac wont boot it just starts and blinks with its power led.
Have checked the error led on the main board and the cpu tray both dont report any error.
But when I install one of my 4Gb ECC stick beside it the mac boots but it only report 4Gb and that the 4Gb is the only stick installed. The cpu tray also report that there is a memory error on the 16gb one.

I was not sure if it was the mac not working with the Load reduced ram or that the ram was faulty so I have tested it in my IBM x3650 M2 and that also wont boot with it and when booted with my 4gb working ECC ram stick it only reports that it sees the 4gb one.

So is this a case of a faulty stick or is it that I'm retarded and both machines I tested it in dont support Load reduced.

PS Sorry if posted the wrong place :/

You bought the wrong RAM for a Mac Pro. It's a 4x4 RAM, a lot of quad rank RAM don't work with MP5,1, and 1066MHz.

The Ram I got is Samsung 16GB PC3L-10600L ECC - M386B2K70DM0-YH90 not those you have quoted, but okay mine is also 4Rx4 so that's maybe the problem.

Do you know if a server that is supporting 4Rx4 LP RDIMM should have any problem using this ram. I'm asking this because if it should work then the ram may be faulty and I need to contact the seller from ebay

I quoted the link you posted.

Depends on the server, some accepts any quad rank, some not.

Well okay then I will look into if I can test the ram in some way then before I contact the seller. Just for good measure the one i linked should have taken you to this listing (see picture)
