Hi,

I'm planning to buy a Mac Pro 4,1 with 2x2,26 Ghz quad core E5520, flash to 5,1 and change CPUs to 2x2,93 Ghz six core X5670 and put 4x8 GB 1066 Mhz ECC. There will be any problem? Massive update :D

Thanks!

Take your time...after firmware update, your rams will run @ 1333mHz

I will say this is a very "standard" update now, nothing special, all you need to know is the dual processor 4,1 use lidless CPU. So you either de-lid the CPU, or study the work around before you start to do anything.

Damn, true. So it will not work with stock heatsink without any modification? I have to remove IHS?

Many, Many, Many threads on this forum discussing this very subject. And as pastrychef said, there is more than one way to skin this cat. Do a search and educate yourself on the two methods and what's required for this update.

There are three methods:
  • Remove the lids (paid service or DIY)
  • Be very careful with tightening the heat sink, and adjust tightness to deal with CPU/memory faults
  • Add washers
The CPU upgrade thread in my signature has notes and links to other threads where they go over these methods in detail.
