Hi Mac Rumors

Today , I lost a hole day , in installing two Intel Xeon X5690 processors in my early 2009 Mac pro 4.1 upgraded to 5.1 firmware.

When I put back my old 4 core 2.26 ghz original CPUs Mac boots normal. Everything is ok. But !

With one or two X5690 Xeons no boot chimes and red light indicating CPU error on processor tray.

What can it be ? Bad CPUs ? Cant believe 2 defects in two cpus?

Im on High Sierra 10.13.6 with Boot ROM Version: 144.0.0.0.0

SMC Version (system): 1.39f5
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f5

No I upgraded 4 Mac pros with not delided CPUs and no problem at all...

This is first time that Mac pro refuse to accept X5690 CPUs.

I would focus on just installing processor A, leaving B empty. Usually, it is an issue with the tightening of the heatsink. I personally always delid on 4,1 DP's and suggest the same to others, I know that you have to be a lot more careful with non-delided procs to avoid pin damage.

In your sig, it says you have a 2012, if you still have that computer you could test the cpu's in it since they still have their lids. Though I do doubt you have two bad procs, anything is possible.

Contact the seller. I assume these are pre-owned. Where were they used last? Might want to search the part number.

Q: are all X5690s "the same"? I assume no.

Tsialex discovered that some cheap X5690's were faulty in that they would work as single processors but not in dual processor mode.

A dual CPU Xeon (E56xx, L56xx, X56xx) has two QPI links while a single CPU Xeon (W36xx) or i7 has only one.

The Chinese market at some point was flooded with X5690 that had just one operational QPI link, it would work perfectly with a single CPU Mac Pro, but not with a dual one, no second QPI link to communicate with the second CPU.

I've had to fight AliExpress for refunds, it's too tiresome. You wait more than a month to get the processor, just to find that the seller sent a defective one that only works with a single CPU tray.

I've stopped buying X5690's, since I've changed to X5680 not one defective yet - knock on wood.

Thank you all for replay.
I checked with 1 X5690 and no boot chime too.
Can the Boot rom 144.0.0.0.0 be a problem?

Hi Koka016, yes check out my thread:

I managed to start just with CPU A, at the moment I'm waiting for advice on what to do next for CPU B:)

Sorry to hear about your issues with AliExpress. I see some Xeon CPUs coming from Malaysia and Costa Rica. Would you know if the Malaysia Xeon CPU are fine and works well with Mac Pros? I did a search but no results found. From what I know, Costa Rica and Malaysia only assembles Xeon CPUs. The manufacturing are done in other countries. Thanks

All Westmere Xeons are the same, there is just one S-Spec.

The problem with defective X5690 Xeons is dishonest sellers.

Thanks for the input, tsialex Yes It’s difficult to deal with dishonest sellers.

Correcting myself here, there is just one S-Spec per model of Westmere Xeons.

If a mid-2010/mid-2012 dual CPU tray was not so obscenely expensive, I would have one just for testing CPUs. Here in Brazil, it's relatively common to find early-2009 dual CPU/20H models on the used market, back then the US dollar/real exchange was still very favourable to us, but it's extremely rare mid-2010/mid-2012 dual CPU Mac Pros here.

So, I have the cheapest thing that will do, a Dell PowerEdge R410 server. :p
