What are the options for video card upgrades from the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 that came with my Mac Pro? I'm on Yosemite but would like to upgrade to High Sierra. Also, is it possible to install a current 802.11AC/BT card that was pulled from another Mac (i.e., Broadcom m.2 card)? TIA.

Yes, but an adapter and extra wires are required. If you already have a compatible card pulled from somewhere, then just get the adapter and cable on Ebay.

For minimum hassle you can get an entire kit here, including the card, which is what I did.

I am running Sierra in mine with a EVGA GTX 750 ti. I keep the GT 120 installed for when I need the boot screen.
Here's a link to which Nvidia driver for which OS: http://www.macvidcards.com/drivers.html

Cave Man! Long time, no see!

I replaced my my 2010 Mac Pro's HD 5770 graphics card with a PC AMD Gigabyte 280X whose VBIOS had be updated with the EFI mod by MacVidCards.com ($100 for the card off of eBay and $115 for MVC to flash it). Works great!

I, too, recommend http://www.osxwifi.com/ for a modern WiFi/BT card. I got one for my 2008 Mac Pro which is running Sierra using dosdude1's installer.

Good to see you alive and well on the 'net.

You have close to 6,800 posts to this forum. Surely you should know how to do research:oops:

Awesome, thanks for that link. You and Stork both recommend it so that’s where I’ll go.

Cave Man! Long time, no see!

Been swamped with work. With the MERS and Ebola outbreaks, the NIH grant money has been rolling in. My lab staff is way bigger than I ever thought it would be. I pretty much sit behind a desk now. Terrible lifestyle.

So, I can’t just buy a modern card from NewEgg (e.g., an AMD 4xx series) and put it in? There are issues with the firmware to make it compatible with my Mac Pro?

I hope things calm down at work. I miss tinkering with my AppleTV I. :)

So, I need the original to boot, but then can use the new card for driving another display? I’d like to add a 5k monitor in addition to my 27” Apple Cinema Display. Can I keep my 27" ACD on the original ATI card, and put the 5k display on the new card without flashing it?

What do you do primarily with your Mac Pro?

Mostly DNA genome and RNA transcriptome assemblies. Historically, the software that does this is cpu-dependent (and RAM intensive), but there are some developmental packages that use the hundreds of gpu cores of a graphics card instead. Much quicker, I am told - instead of a week, it can do it overnight. I have the 2.66 gHz 12-core Westmere. As you might imagine, the data are enormous and the graphics tools have improved quite dramatically. So, I need lots of gpu cores and the ability to do 5k resolution for assembly maps.

Did a google search and it appears to be a bit more complicated than assembling a hackintosh. So, before I move forward with my Mac Pro I’d like the advice of the MacRumors forum members. They’ve been fabulous at tech support in areas in which I do not have extensive experience.

Sheeeesh! Sounds serious. 5k output+lots of compute sounds like either a 1080Ti or RX Vega card, but i've been told that powering the RX Vega cards in a Mac Pro without any PSU mods can be dangerous. Most cards from the last year or so can output 5k put MacOS scales it down AFAIK. Honestly, I'm not sure what exact card may suit your needs. What is the name of the program that you use for these assemblies? What is the programs "preferred GPU API" OpenGL or OpenCL? AMD cards tend to excel in OpenCL and general compute, while nVidia cards do best in OpenGL

I think a group of people should put together a thread/sticky that has FAQ's about Mac Pro upgrades in general
I agree. It's a huge pain in the butt to keep searching and skimming through everything. A FAQ would certainly help. I'd correlate all the research I've done in the past month from obtaining my first cMP.

I've started a thread for us cMP folks to start collaborating: Here
