Hey! You guys have probably been asked this a million times but I'd appreciate a bit of help!

I want to upgrade my 5770 in my mac pro 5,1 mid 2010
Processor 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 24 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

I don't want to have any power issues and was wondering would a gtx 680 work ok or will i need another power source?
Final cut, photoshop and other apps like that are what i use primarily with some gaming...
Thanks!

Yeah it has been asked a lot, but yes a lot of people are using the GTX680 - so you should be fine.

Sorry! yea i did a detailed search but really my issue was also if 4 core or 8 core makes a difference... no point in having a cpu bottle neck..

I've read this card works also without supply EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 Graphics Card (4 GB, GDDR5, PCI Express 3.0, HDMI, DVI-I, DVI-D, Display Port, 256-Bit)

any ideas on how much gain it would be (over the 680) if its usable!

Thanks for your help!

Sorry if I misunderstand but 4 Core vs 8 Core is not an issue with your machine since you cannot upgrade it into 8 cores anyway. The 8 Core models are dual processor 4 Core machines

No it doesn't matter in these machines. The PCI slots all run at the speed, no matter the interconnect speed of the processor.

The OP (from my understanding) thought the 8 core may have more bandwidth internally. They are both identical when it comes to PCI, although the lower end Quads do have a slower QPI which is (sometimes) upgraded when you change the processor if the new processor can handle it.

Also, 4/6 core Mac Pros can be upgraded to 8/12 core models if you get the correct processor board. For 4,1 (2009) Mac Pros, you need a 4,1 board. For a 5,1 (2010/2012) you need a 5,1 board.

Would upgrading to faster cpu help as well as upgrading to gtx970?

or does going from 2.8 to 3.2 or 6core 3.3 really give me much more?

Using PS aperture lightroom and finalcut...

I'm reading the gtx 970 is faster then the gtx 680 and better bang for your buck..!
