Mac Pro 5,1 970 GTX Power requirements

Good morning.

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 and an Asus 970 GTX

Do I just need the mini pci-e from the Motherboard to the 8 pin Pci-E connector, or do I need
to use both mini pci-e on the motherboard for the videocard?

I have a GTX 980Ti and it works fine. Even the recovery partition has video.
